Why? I thought this was for europeans...

There might be other countries too than Israel though, i do not know. Just curious.

How many think the voting is the only thing even remotely interesting about this. I can't count the times I've switched on just to see the votes cast. So many nice opportunities for the people in charge to make embarassing mistakes or just act in a generally silly way.

Gotta love it.

Oh, and Germany will of course give 12 points to Turkey if they're even in this year.

Winston, yes. That is the only thing i watch. I like to see those contestors going crazy when they get full points from some country. And to see that we don't get any points at all (which is only fair considering how much we suck at this).

You're right. Instead of watching the songs being performed, use that time to learn a little about the history of Europe; it's rivalries and such. It makes the voting a far more enjoyable experience when you know why everyone votes the way they do.

Israel is in because they're members of the European Broadcasting Union which holds the contest.

I remember Israel winning so many times in the seventies they eventually had to enter an immensely bad song because they couldn't afford to host the contest any longer.

Pop singers across Europe got to know Tel Aviv quite well in those days. Many of them are now in Kibbutzes and haven't been heard from for years. So I guess it was good for something.

The Arabs were afraid to play with us back then, and Euros were nicer than they are today so they allowed us to participate in the European competitions.
