The broken alliance is not a cheat - but the AI returning ships halfway across the Atlantic is damn annoying. I guess it is a Civ "feature" I can't do much about - but if you hadn't blockaded Portsmouth and stopped the troops I was going to take Orleans with from getting to France, I wouldn't have had to do it.

I will not hinder Dutch ships - but I have a right to expect them not to hinder mine - which they WERE doing!

I used Horse Artillery and Marines, Henrik. As said in my post. For Boston, Cavalry and 1 Marine sufficed. Changing your mind about Marines yet...?

Brittish marines I respect, french marines I still have a very low opinion off (more cost for the same unit values...)

True. You only get the marine flag, and as Boarding Parties are so strong in this game, particularly against Forts, the French should concentrate on them.

For the English, that extra HP is often worth the extra 20 shields, as in the late game this often just means 5 turns to build a unit, rather than 4.

More vineyards destroyed, soon all will be gone, I hope this satisfies our ally Spain.

The year of our lord 1781 Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Despite the horrid loss of the beutiful city of Orleans, now spoilt and defiled by English plunderers, the year of 1781 has been one of many victories for the glorious French forces.

In the New World the Brittish settlement of New Brunswick was conquered without any significant losses and the French northern expiditionary force is expected to advance northwards to a suspected second Brittish colony in the area.
To the south, French forces where able to once again seize controll of Fort Tinconderoga.
The fort's current garrison is larger than it ever was during it's previous French ownership, and the troops where delighted to report that the fort had been seiged with it's non combatant's shelters intact.

A frenzy of diplomatical activity is said to have taken place during the year and many rumours circulate, however there has been no formal treaties declared as of yet (but that does not mean none where signed ).
It is believed that the French government will clarify it's diplomatical endeavors in the spring of 1781...

In Europe where Brittish forces most unrightfully attacked the royal city of Orleans, a bold line of action was taken.
Instead of striking at Orleans where the Brittish army was expected to have garrisoned many of it's experienced troops.
A large scale storm of the trenches surounding Paris was undertaken.
The attack was a total succes (allbeit a succes involving many casualties) and all Brittish forces beseiging the French capital was anhilated, among these where 7 units of brittish seige mortars, and two brigades of royal siege engineers!
Even the trenches themselves where destroyed to prevent new Brittish troops from moving in and holding the area untill reinforcements can arrive.
At this point, the Brittish passed the French in # of lost heavy seige equipment, and this strike is suspected to have severely reduced the Brittish ability to wage war in Europe.
Finally, some French millitary analysists dare say, the Battle of Paris is over!

Despite this turn of event, the French commander in cheif must congratulate the Brittish field marshal to a very well managed campaign.

Indeed I might, SKI. Well, Henrik, shall we negotiate a peace? Looks like I won't be taking Paris for a few years yet! As I attacked first (even though I waited the statutory move), I will let you move last in this war.

Tell me if you want that move to be it.

Otherwise, I have plenty of troops left in Europe, but very few siege guns. Therefore I can do damage, but take no well-defended cities....

I didn't say peace would be general, or even for the rest of the game! However, it IS a point, and I would like to keep fighting. However, there is not much hope of taking more French cities now, except at the edges. To play a total "mad-dog" style would be (1) unrealistic, (2) unfair on Henrik, who might have plans for France that do not include a death stuggle with England and (3) not my style anyway.

Yes, I can be a warmonger, but I hope not a totally irrational one...

Wow, that French victory sure came cheap! I seem to have lost 3 Marines, 6 Grenadiers, 1 Dragoon, 1 Horse Artillery and 3 Musketeers, all for 3 French Grenadiers and 2 French Dragoons!

This is fortified, on a hill, in a fort! Many of them veteran, almost all of them at 100% strength. Plus 2 Horse Artillery and 2 Marines that were in the open.

Well, if that sort of army can't defend itself against attack in such a great position without causing a few more casualties, I don't know how I should play it anymore! I'm not suggesting anything unfair, but it seems the attacker gets huge bonuses (although my troops only seem to get them dependably when they are Boarding Parties! ).

You guys are more experienced MP than I am. Is that normal? If so, I will have to edit a version of the rules.txt in 3.2 and 4.0 so the MP games are biased towards the defender a bit more, just to make the game balanced.

Anyway, no action on the English side this year.

IMHO I was very lucky John, that said, there are bonuses for the attackers in MP (but not THAT substantial, when it comes down to it, luck can be very decisive, I couldn't believe I won some of those battles myself).
Also though they don't show in the casualty line (becouse they wheren't lost) I had heavy artillery as well.
Perhaps you underestimated the size of the Garrison of Paris?
I've had 20+ grenadiers there all along (but haven't dared attack before more where vets for the reasons you mention).

Fair enough Henrik. I thought afterwards that you might have had lots of seige artillery that didn't show up.

Oh well, hanging around outside Paris for so long was always risky. Because I didn't have this war planned in advance, I never had enough heavy guns to take Paris, it being on a river....

John, it's an old unwritten rule that there is no defense in MP, only offense.

The game works well enough, it's pretty balenced for three players, I think.

I'm glad it's almost over though, this was a LONG game, and I am a bit tired of it at this point.

Nothing much to report game wise, another vineyard destroyed.

About the war, I think it was foolhardy to launch a war against a superior power, let alone two such nations.

Spain is by far the largest power, I think we can safely say Spain is the winner, Mannolo acomplished more then his historical counterparts, he kept the Spainish empire strong and united, not a bad feat.

France has also exceded historical expectations, they have managed a powerful enpire in the Americas, and held off Britain.

England also did well, but the two wars you began both ended badly, in niether case were your forces well prepared.

I agree that - barring a miracle over the next 18 turns- England could not be considered the winner!

I would actually say that the contest was between Spain and Holland for the overall winner, because Manolo did all that you say (without our strong Grenadier unit, with a lesser Dragoon, and no Jesuit or Marine), but Holland has a huge New World empire that in 1780 she had lost totally IRL. And with a Government form that hindered her war options.

So far, I rate Spain and Holland equal first, France third, and England last. France has a big empire too, but needs to recover her borders in Europe if she is to rival you guys (which she may do by 1800, of course).

Having said that, I think the reason Spain and Holland have done so well was that they avoided major war. Spain didn't need those strong military units fighting only the Independents and AI-controlled Natives. OK, Spain has been in conflict, but only mildly, and has gained nicely each time. (Wll done, Manolo - the mark of a rational warrior!)

France and England have been in a state of outright war, preparation for war or direct rivalry for pretty much the entire game. This has wasted a vast amount of time and treasure - but has been huge fun!

OK, I am relieved too that the game is coming to a close soon. It will have been nearly 2 years! But it has been really worthwhile, and a steep learning curve for me for MP - which I hope will benefit Colonies 3.2x and 4.x.

...and did I mention that it's been huge fun?

I agree this has been one of the best pbems I've played in
And I also agree that currently Holland and Spain stands as the winners, however there are still turns left so I think that it might be a little early to start deciding who the winners might be...
The French turn will be delayed untill she can meet with Spain online.

That may be true. But Johnnie intends to rewrite the (unwritten) rules! If that's logically possible

Colonies IV will have two rules.txt files, one for MP. Defence WILL be an option, even with the unstackable terrain.
