How to produce NONE engineers Suffering from ads?

In a German forum a member refused to build a 2nd city with his 2nd settler. He said that the settler would become a NONE-engineer.
I replied, it's easy to get NONE engineers with the following trick:
Put an engineer on a ship, let it sail to an island next to an AI civ, found a city and disband the city by rush building an engineer - et voila!

Of course the NONE settler will only become a NONE engineer if you have Leo's. Then yes, it will remain a NONE after being automatically upgraded.

Your approach for obtaining NONE settlers/engineers also works. Doesn't just have to be on an island. As long as the city being disbanded is closer to an AI city than to your nearest city, then the resulting set/eng will be NONE.

Build with your first two settlers as it is unlikely that you will get a nomad from a hut if you have a non settler on the same continent. In the record breaking games played by samson and Solo they always used to build with nomads in the hope they would get further settlers. A nomad is much better than an advanced tribe as you can choose the location of the city. The main sources of nomads seem to be woodland/icecap huts. On the poles there is no restriction to the number of settlers that appear on a continent.

While there have been exceptions reported to the only one none per continent theory, it does seem to have some validity. A few weeks ago, I got a none and found another mountain hut the same turn, I waited a turn to settle a city before popping the hut. I got another none.

Others have claimed that if you're closer to another civ or in the northernmost part of the map, that the percentage of getting one is greater. I have never seen anything that would support these theories.

The theory about being nearer an AI civ does seem credible - though I have a feeling that it's one of those measures (like corruption) that increase with distance from your capital.

The game encourages expansion in the remote corners of the globe with all those advanced tribes. Easier for the AI to steal tech when the human has a sprawling empire

It goes based off what city is closest, to determine support. If its an AI city, you will bet a none. The distance is as the AI calculates it. Not exactly the same as true distance.

Ramses, your insights are all ones that are pretty common to experienced deity players. Which most of us were in 1997...

2 Questions.

1. Frequency of occurance, fluke or happens every game.
2. Anybody else seen this? I've gotten 1000's of nomads and never once wasn't it a none.

You've got me curious.

but this one thread from just over a year ago.
The originator, silverdragon, stipulated some were supported but all other responders had never experienced on.

But as in all these threads, someone always seems to have seen the exception.

Not me. I play MGE and 2.42, never got a supported settler from a hut. Didn't consider it possible before this.

It's not like there's an overwhelming amount of posting on the Civ2 board. I'm glad to see almost anything that generates discussion.

Ramses, do you understand the reference to "Groundhog's Day"? I see you're from Germany and don't know if that movie is familiar there.

For what it's worth - I have never seen a supported Nomad (ie a settler from a hut) - but a settler from disbanding a city can be supported -- is this the source of confusion? Could it be a Mac thing, Smash?

I am also aware of the disbanding city for a settler being supported if it's closer to one of your cities. And I wouldn't be suprised if it was a "MAC" thing. A lot of exceptions seem to happen on that platform.

It could be a MAC thing.I have been playing with pc versions for about 4 months now and I havn't seen it yet.Havn't played 1000s of games though...not yet

It was rare.I seem to recall it happening when I was playing "build and expand anywhere ASAP" type game.

Don't worry about saving face.
My favorite is the getting a city from a hut prior to placing your capital.
All of the regulars claimed it was impossible. None of us had ever seen it and didn't even think about it. Then One poster claimed he had had it happen to him, and all of a sudden people were coming out of the woodwork saying it had happened to them once or twice. Then someone said it happened all the time.

I still never witnessed it or believed it possible. A group of us played the no-founding city challange and NO ONE ever had to reset due to getting a city from a hut. Thousands of huts were opened and never a city.

Then someone said MAC. And then those that had claimed it had happened that didn't have MACs started to question their own beliefs.

For every absolute in the game, you can find someone that claims it's not.

I used a MAC mostly when I played back in 97-99. There were some differences on that platform.

Suffering from ads?

There's always the shame-faced person who has to admit that he changed his rules.exe. "Oh...sorry. Forgot to tell you that I changed my rules.exe. I'm using the Fascist mod."

Also people who lack the most current patch.
