	Ashcroft: U.S. foiled 'dirty' bomb attack Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

This is all CNN has on the story at the moment:

quote: U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced today that the U.S. has captured a "known terrorist" with connections to al Qaeda who was plotting to build and detonate a radioactive "dirty" bomb in the United States. The man, a U.S. citizen who was captured last month as he flew into Chicago's O'Hare Airport from Pakistan, has been turned over to the Defense Department as an "enemy combatant."

1) Is it even legal to turn over a US citizen captured on US soil over to the military?

2) If the charges are in fact true, what would the implications have been had he actually manged to carry out the plot?

1) I don't think so. Posse Comitatus Act forbids the use of the military as a police.

2) It could have made a lot of people quite sick, but the debris from a dirty bomb ought to be fairly easy to clean up.

I wonder how he was to get his hands on the radioactives.

Re question #2, I would be interested in knowing as well. Not exactly located in the safest place for this...

I was just talking with somebody this weekend about this and I said that this was probably the biggest "fear" that the administration has. A radiological weapon.

I left out that a speedy response (within hours) to such an attack will reduce casualties by reducing any exposure. Unfortunately, I doubt that the possibility of such a rapid response exists within every metropolitan area.

If that is all info available, it's impossible to make any conclusions. This admin has used unsubstantiated terror scares before ad has about zero credibility. So it may have been serious, or it is, translated from Ashcroft speak:

"known terrorist" = someone suspected of terrorism in any way, probably for being an arab muslim
"with connections to al Qaeda" = has some documents where the words show up, maybe just in newspaper clips
"who was plotting to build and detonate a radioactive "dirty" bomb"" = went to the library and read a book about plutonium or similar stuff
Now and don't tell me this spin exercise would be beyond dubya and co.

I think it's quite obvious that AMERICA should strike back with a couple of dirty bomb plots aimed at whoever (or should I say WHATEVER) planned this ATROCITY. America's getting rid of Al-(sp), if it's the last damn thing we do, and it starts TODAY. We've already ripped on the communist forests (5, count 'em 5 "accidental" wildfires are raging in the west), destroyed two countries in the World Cup, and invented the WAFFLE IRON, we ain't slowin down ANY TIME SOON.

All things considered, Id rather it be hyped up then ignored or have it underestimated. You may not see it that way, but then again, you don't live in the area in question.

How big are we talking? Even the biggest conventional bombs (and that the type of explosives we're talking about) wouldn't be able to scatter that much debris, even with high winds. I doubt they'd be able to particlize the radioactives to such a degree that it would travel far or get into people's systems to a large degree.

Don't get me wrong, it'd still be a horrible thing, and for those who were exposed, a lifetime nightmare, even if they didn't get sick (they'd always be waiting for the hammer to fall). And it would terrorize the nation. But I think it would turn out to be more of a mouse than a lion.

Who knows for sure what is hype and what is a valid threat with all of the "reports". But in any case you surely do not believe that there will be no more terrorism in the United States do you? I think they will wait like they did before -- for one day...
