Considering ToT runs on my machine and Civ3 can't, there is no surprise I prefer the former. Why on Earth did they have to put these graphics and high resolution only?

This is a no brainer. Civ2TOT is now best in the series. Civ3 in its current state is crap! I've played it serveral times with all patches and nothing seems to work right. Played Romans and couldn't produce Legions when I discovered Iron working technology and connected the Cities to Iron deposits. Just to many bugs to make it could.
All the crap from Civ3 is making me come back to these old forums. Its great theres still a community for CIV2 series.

"Played Romans and couldn't produce Legions when I discovered Iron working technology and connected the Cities to Iron deposits" ... ??
never seen such a bug, Civ3 have a lots of problems with PC config, but never heard before this such kind of bug
Yep Civilization Test of Time is actually the best Civ-game
... till Civ3 allows scenario creation
Haupt. Dietrich
happy u like my WW2 scenario
try also my "Japan" Scenarios. the "historic" scenario is like an "original" game with 4 civs (u start with 1 city and no techs, map to discover) but of course with a map of japan and with japaneses units, etc...

Eyn, This happend after I installed the newest patch for Civ3. At first I thought maybe I changed the rules but it was a fresh install and then installation of the patch 1.21 i think. I played for an hour it seemed and when I had everything ready, it wouldn't let me produce legions. Its just frustrating......
Civ3 scenarios could become great when the ex and new patch come out. But a comment from the staff about problems you might have with the editor patch (check the scenarios thread in Play the World forum) could make it worse. In its current state you can only make mods. City placement, unit placement is just a dream at the moment.
Civ2 in any form still rules!

I think I know what you're missing. I mentioned that '39 is a great song as far as SMAC goes.
The song '39 is about a load of astronauts that travel from Earth to another world in the year '39 of an unknown century.
They travel there and set up a new base, and return to Earth to tell everyone about the good news. However, in accordance with the theory of relativity, the astronauts have only aged one year during the whole trip there and back, but the people on the Earth have already had 100 years pass by.
Hence the song's title '39 (since 100 years pass by and it's the same year of different centuries) and also the chorus:
Oh so many years are gone! Though I'm older but a year,
Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me.
(...)
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand,
In the land that our grandchildren knew.
Civ3 has a lot of great ideas, such as culture, armies, and resources, but unfortunately they didn't make full use of them - what you have is a somewhat half-baked concoction. Plus, in a disturbing (but by no means unique) trend of designer exclusiveness, they made the game very difficult to mod for: unit animations, leader animations, no events/scenario builder. They also committed a series of unforgivable crimes vis a vis devolving the game mechanics - eliminating firepower, simplifying the governmental models, and eliminating the probe/spy/diplomat vector.
All in all, if I want first rate strategy gaming, I'll play SMAC. If I want arcade style (ie softcore, not hardcore) strategy gaming, I'll play Civ ToT.

You can have up to 4 different maps in a game... Compared to classic Civ2 you can have more units, the rules have been extended so there are more possible options with technologies, terrains and units. Colors aren't limited to a palette, there's more event space... In short, it has much more advanced scenario making capabilities than Civ2, add to that the near limitless abilities of Angelo Scotto's CSPL and you have yourself the ultimate scenario making package.
If you're neither into scenario making, nor into scenario playing you'll just have to do with the 4 linked maps, the extra games (sci-fi, fantasy and extended games, which are basically extensive Civ2 modpacks) and animated graphics.
If you don't like the graphics, you can change them.

Its actually a new language for events in TOT. With it you can do alot more events like stuff. Theres a thread somewhere here about it and its abilities. Civ2 TOT
