My father employed a tool called "The Board of Correction", which was a wooden paddle about a foot and a half long and a couple of inches thick...it had a cutesy saying on the front about "wrasslin' cowboys and whallopin' wolves" or some crap. It has since been stolen and added to my immense memorabelia collection. Mom used the wooden spoon technique. Occassionally one or the other would get so pissed as to administer instant punishment by way or a punch or a slap.
Dad would go through a long, elaborate process of removing his rings when he was going to hit me.
Personally, I don't think it did a thing for me, as I just grew more fearful and became quite the little liar to avoid further punishments.
I'm not saying that some kids wouldn't respond well to a good thrashing, just that I personally did not.
Don't plan on hitting my child, but I do have some fiendishly clever ideas that involve insane boredom and avoidance, if I pull them off correctly.

You're kind of a depressing dude. Stop blaming everything on the folks and get on with your life.

Oh...and I suppose you lost consciousness while strangling them. Weak.

Actually, if Prosper's personality type (happy, smiley, slightly mischeivious) holds, I probably won't have to ever use corporal punishment.

My plan is two-fold:
All indiscretions will be met with a very long, sit down talk about the crime. To the point of absolute insanity, as I will make him examine every angle and side of the issue until he is so sick of talking about it he'll never do it again.
Part two is this: Every time he screws up, he's going to have to write an essay about his error. If it is a repeated offense, the essays will have to be elaborated and expanded severely.

The upside is this....when he's older, he'll be a good writer and have excellent penmenship. Also, I plan on keeping all the essays and putting them in a book for him. When he strikes out on his own, I'm going to hand him this book and say "Son, you've learned a lot of things in you life--don't forget your common sense."

How does that sound?

Got spare money?

Of course, this is my "pie in the sky" theory. Practical problems may necessitate practical responses.
However, I believe that corporal punishment is more a un-imaginative approach than a necessary evil.
But that is only from my own experience...I've met a lot of people that seem to have needed a good solid spanking a time or two.
Just don't think there is a blanket response to all people.

Nope, I'm not exaggerating. Before punishment began I would be told that the whipping was going to hurt my Father more than it hurt me and that crying not only demonstrated that I wasn't concentrating on the lesson and that I wasn't becoming sufficiently disciplined, but also that I didn't respect his feelings.

Thie was in the 1950s, before the movement away from corporal punishment reqally began. My parents were children of the Great Depression and Southerners as well. Their manual for child raising was some awful book written at the turn of the century entitled "As The Twig Is Bent". The basic gist of the book was that unyielding discipline was the best thing for kids of all ages.

My parents never spanked me. Never grounded me. Never washed my mouth with soap. They didn't believe in hurting me (physically, emotionally, and any other way) to teahc me. They just talked to me. But, as a kid, I never really did bad things. Untill I became a teenager, I never even questioned my parents, about anything. And I still don't for the most part. Except when I truly believe they're wrong.

Yeah...I've got some in-laws that take their cues from the Bible and smack their kids all the time...in the face, etc. I am so pissed when they do that...but don't know what to do/say.
I think the next time it happens I'm just going to tell them it is their right to do what they want, but my right not to have myself or my kid around them, so adios forever.
That'll go over well, I'm sure.

Oh, I forgot some doozies...folks forced me to eat liver once...puked it all over the dinner table....ha ha ha.
Also, Mom used liquid soap on me once...puked all over the kitchen floor.
Then they switched to making me hold Tobasco sauce in my mouth, which at the time really sucked, but has led to a superhuman resistance to spices and hot sauce.
Hoo haw!

I chugged a whole bottle of tabasco sauce during Plebe Year Army week at the Academy. It hits your stomache like a fist. I acted all tought during the meal...but afterwards went to the head and puked. lots of blood came up. The head accross from the mess hall was full of plebes who had done the same thing. If you didn't puke, your sh*ts really hurt for the next couple days.

Oh, I'm the toughest sensitive guy you'll ever meet, GP. I can kick your ass seven ways to Sunday and then give you a big sloppy hug afterwards, if you like.
I just don't go for all this "spare the rod" crap. Besides, unless you have a child, I don't think you can realize how tough it would be to actually hit said child, unless you're some messed up puppy yourself.
I love my son so much it hurts. I can't imagine hurting him.
But he won't be some limp wristed pansy, if that's what you're getting at...there are a lot of ways to build character that don't include beatings, IMO.
