They tried that in the 70s with demos etc.

Tried to force all classes at McGill to be taugh in French within 5 years (McGill Francais). Got laughed out of town when they realised that meant 3/4 of the faculty would have to move somewhere else. Would have dropped us from 1st-rate Uni to the level of Northwestern pretty quickly...

My sister went to McGill. NU is pretty comparable. Maybe even more of a research school. Donno really.

Just remember an odd feeling of being behind enemy lines as a USNA senior visiting her. But I enjoyed drinking in Montreal. And I made a big hit by filling here firdge with "extra-fat"* French food from little bakeries and butcher shops. Yumm Yumm. It was good to recieve a salary for the effort of going to school.

*no kidding...extra fat.

If you want proof, Tingkai, call the government and ask them yourself.

Otherwise shut the hell up. I don't need to prove anything to you. If you don't want to, don't take my word for it. But don't call me wrong on it, since you haven't bothered to do the research yourself.

Calm down boy. No need for a hissy fit.

You're the one making the claims so back up your statements.

You're claiming that you're right to vote ends when you become a dual citizen. Not bloody likely.

Try telling that to Revenue Canada. There is no legal definition of "resident" under Canadian tax laws so the Revenue Canada can, but not necessarily tax the income I earn overseas even if I declare myself a non-resident.

It's a crazy ambiguous situation.

Note the words "GENERAL RULE."

According to Revenue Canada, "Residential ties in Canada include:
a home;
a spouse or common-law partner and dependants who stay here while you are living abroad; and
personal property, such as a car or furniture, and social ties.
Other ties that may be relevant include a Canadian driver's licence, Canadian bank accounts or credit cards, and health insurance with a Canadian province or territory."

Well, it appears I fall under this "general rule" so your point is entirely moot.

I will reiterate: The US government is not my government because I don't vote for it while I live in Canada, I don't pay taxes to it while I live in Canada, and I'm not subject to most of their tyranny.

Right now, the Canadian Government (as pathetic as it is) is my federal government. Not the American government.

Can you see that now? Or are you still going to be arrogant about it?

So you're back to sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "I'm right, I'm right, I'm right."

Don't worry, you're not the first American to reject your government and you won't be the last.

The funny thing is you're always bleating on about how great the US is, and how you want to move there as soon as you stop leeching off the Canadian education system, and now you're rejecting your connections to the US.

Why don't you just admit that this thread was just another one of your trolls aimed at trashing Canadians and the Liberal Party.

You trash the Liberals for a motion that was passed by MPs from all parties. You trash the Canadian government for doing something the Americans have done.

You're just a troll. (And if you're going to respond, try to come up with something better then "I'm not a troll, you are").

So basically what you're saying is you still don't get how I can view this as my government, and that there is an absolute right or wrong?

quote:
Don't worry, you're not the first American to reject your government and you won't be the last.

It's the Canadian one I'm rejecting, I'm just saying I'm not actually considering the American one my government since I'm, for all intents and purposes, a Canadian living in Canada. I still am an American with some responsibilities (perhaps the next Draft? ), but I'm not looking at that. You, apparently, are. Clued in yet?

quote:

The funny thing is how amazingly stupid you can be when you want to be right.
I'm just telling you I don't consider the American government to be my government when I don't pay taxes nor vote for them, which seems pretty damn fair to me, and you dig up obscure wording in Canadian tax laws that say, under certain extreme circumstances I may pay Canadian income taxes when living out of the country? WTF?

quote:
Why don't you just admit that this thread was just another one of your trolls aimed at trashing Canadians and the Liberal Party.

...trashing Canadians? How do you figure?
Trashing the Liberal Party? Yes. That should be obvious to everyone, and I've never denied that.

quote:
You trash the Liberals for a motion that was passed by MPs from all parties. You trash the Canadian government for doing something the Americans have done.

I trash the Liberals because that's what the article is about. I trash the Liberals because I hate the Liberals. I also said the US was being silly about it too, or did you miss that in your selective reading?

quote:
You're just a troll. (And if you're going to respond, try to come up with something better then "I'm not a troll, you are").

Well, at least you're getting smart to the point where you can realize it's you that is being the troll.

It's a simple "fun" thread and you come in here almost in tears (in your first post) and now you're off arguing semantics because I don't consider it to be MY government when I don't LIVE UNDER IT. Then you go off on how I'm renouncing my American citizenship or something silly.

You're a very silly man, Tingkai, if I didn't know better I'd think you were in junior high.

And I really do wish Tingkai would stop blasting me for "leeching off the Canadian Education system". I'm willing to bet my family puts in far more money into the Canadian Education system than Tingkai, so his argument is totally confusing to me. Perhaps if we didn't pay Canadian taxes and went to Canadian-subsidized universities that'd be a valid argument.

Other than that it makes no sense.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Asher: why do always try to make simple things complex? This is quite easy to understand so I’ll explain it to you one last time: you are an American citizen therefore the American government is your government. You are also a Canadian citizen, therefore the Canadian government is also your government. The only way it ceases to be your government is if you renounce your citizenship. Simple, isn’t it?

I ignored this comment the first time you wrote it because it made no sense whatsoever. It still doesn’t make any sense. Just look at my first post:
“The Canadian troll speaks again. Funny how he claims dual citizenship, but now he claims that the US government is not his government. He wants the privileges of American citizenship without accepting the responsibilities.

“There is nothing “silly” about what parliament did. They spent a couple of minutes re-affirming what we know to be true. The House of Representatives is the one trying to re-write history using "new evidence" that has been in dispute for years.”

If you see tears, then the tears are in your eyes.

You have repeatedly trashed French Canadians and other eastern Canadians. You have stated that you think Canada is a cesspool. You have repeatedly stated that your goal in life is to get out of Canada as soon as you graduate from university.

You’re a leech on Canadian society because you only want to take advantage of a cheap education, and then high tail it to the U.S. once you graduate.

No one cares about how much your parents have paid in taxes. Everyone pays taxes. The question is what have you done in return for the benefits you received from living in Canada? What have you done for Canada?

Maybe you have made a worthy contribution, and if you have I’ll take back my comments, but the messages you have posted on this list only indicate that you are a spoiled brat.

The simple thing is that's opinion, and I disagree.
Country is not the same thing as government.

I'm not talking in a strictly literal sense, Tingkai, why can't you deal with that? I don't consider the US government to be my current government since I don't live there.

It's so very simple, but you enjoy being so very difficult.

It's hardly my goal in life, Tingkai. A goal in life is something you set so at the end of your life you achieve it and feel all good about yourself.

I merely stated my intentions to leave the country after I graduate. Mainly to get away from people like you.

quote:

What has Canada done for me? I can already hear your trite little comments about how it gives me a democracy and gives us all these rights and free healthcare and free public education and all that crap. That's all well and good, but you also forget that I've basically been born and raised in Alberta. I've not seen the democracy been in action, everyone I've grown up around has basically been an expandable vote in the democracy. I was born in the middle of the NEP and the economic reprecussions lasted for many years after. I know all about Canada and its democracy, and I choose not to live here once I start making serious money.

I will not stand for my money to be spent the way Ottawa spends it. The only reason we moved back here from California was because my dad's company agreed to normalize his salary so that the higher taxes didn't matter in Canada. I probably won't get such a deal, so I'm going to join the masses in moving south.

If you've got a problem with that, don't ***** at me, ***** at your federal government. They're the ones I have a problem with.

quote:
Maybe you have made a worthy contribution, and if you have I’ll take back my comments, but the messages you have posted on this list only indicate that you are a spoiled brat.

My parents don't give me money. They have money, but I pay for my stuff myself. I'm "spoiled' in that I've got a roof over my head and they pay for food. They were both basically poor growing up, and have seen that the "spoiled brats" tend not to make something of themselves when they spend their lives living off daddy's money.

I pay my tuition (well, outside of scholarships which I'm still running on), I pay for my computers, I pay for movies and going out -- all of these I pay for with my own job.

I can't stand having you telling me I'm freeloading off the Canadian people by using the public universities while I live here while intending to move away. I don't have much choice, Tingkai. I can pay many times more to be an out of state university student to some US college, but how would I do that? I don't qualify for student loans. I can't afford to pay all of that without loans, what do you expect me to do? I can't get the state-subsidized rate since our family lives here. Deal with that. And considering how much money my family contributes in income taxes to the federal government, I'd think it's fairly safe to assume that even while staying here I'm a net benefit to the country. So **** off.

Since you're so pissed off about freeloaders, why don't you nuke Newfoundland and be done with it? Hypocrite.

From the St Petersburg Times

quote:
In 1986, the Conference Board of Canada found 3 percent of the country's natural scientists emigrated to the United States; by 1996 that had increased to 11 percent. The percentage of engineers leaving rose almost threefold and the percentage of doctors heading south shot up almost fivefold.

"Of eight Canadian babies who were born around the same time I was and who went on to win Nobel Prizes, seven of them did their prize-winning work in the U.S.," says Richard Taylor, an Alberta-born physicist and Nobel Laureate at California's Stanford University.

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien has pooh-poohed reports of a brain drain, saying it is a myth perpetrated by big business to force the government into lowering taxes. While conceding that taxes are higher in Canada, Chretien insists that few Canadians want to live in the United States because there is so much crime "you cannot go into a park at night."

From statscan

quote:
During the 1990s, Canada suffered a net loss of skilled workers to the United States in several key knowledge-based occupations, according to an analysis of the migration of knowledge workers into and out of Canada.

What that article goes on to say is that the people who are leaving tend to be high income earners i.e. more senior while the immigrants who take their place in the stats are less senior.
