Canada Tells U.S. That Inventor Bell No Phony
Sat Jun 22,11:12 AM ET

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada answered the call on Friday and proclaimed that Alexander Graham Bell is the inventor of the telephone, no matter what the U.S. Congress says.

According to North American history books, Bell, who emigrated to Canada from Scotland, developed the idea for the device at his family's homestead in Brantford, Ontario. He received a U.S. patent in 1876.

Canadian lawmakers rose to Bell's defense after the U.S. Congress passed a resolution saying credit actually belongs to Antonio Meucci, who immigrated to the United States from Italy.

Meucci filed notice of an impending invention in 1871 with U.S. authorities but was too poor to renew the claim in 1874, allowing Bell to get the patent and the credit, according the congressional resolution.

Canadian Heritage Minister Copps said U.S. lawmakers are trying to rewrite history for political benefit.

"(Bell) is an inspiring example of a Canadian inventor who, by his ingenuity and his perseverance, contributed to the advancement of knowledge and the progress of humanity," Copps said.

The Canadian House of Commons approved a resolution on Friday officially recognizing Bell as the telephone's inventor. Like the one passed by U.S. lawmakers, it carries only ceremonial weight.

Don't you just love the silliness that is the Canadian House of Commons?

I think they're wrong, it's not the US, it's the Italians. Just look at how Marconi screwed Tesla out of the radio.

That's funny, because it was precipitated by a similar motion in the US passed to try to steal recognition from Bell in favour of an American.

Yes, there's sillyness on both sides of the border.

The difference being the US changed the inventor upon new evidence that Bell may not have done it, Canada is stating what we already knew despite the new evidence because there's a Canadian connection.

There's no difference, Asher. The US glommed onto some minor piece of new evidence as an excuse to grab a bit of glory.

Yes, it is silly. But that's not my government, this is, and I'm here to b*tch about it.

The US didn't do it in some kind of knee-jerk reaction as part of a persistent inferiority complex like Canada did either. I think there is a difference.

Both are silly, Canada is sillier.

The Canadian troll speaks again. Funny how he claims dual citizenship, but now he claims that the US government is not his government. He wants the priviledges of American citizenship without accepting the responsibilities.

There is nothing silly about what parliament did. They spent a couple of minutes re-affirming what we know to be true. The House of Representatives is the one trying to re-write history using "new evidence" that has been in dispute for years.

Brain drain is lots of hype, no substance. Even only taking US into account we barely run a deficit in highly-skilled professionals, and taking ROW into account we run a fairly hefty surplus...

The brain drain mainly affects Third World countries that have no money to establish modern facilities for their scientists and engineers. It is entirely true considering that there are way more foreign students in advanced degrees in the US than USians.

uhm excuse me but if the patent was filed in 1871 and bell filed his in 1876 then the one in 1871 is really the inventor. he who files the first patent is the inventor and the holder of the patent. Its the basis for patent law. That would be like me going and filing a patent for the telephone now and saying i invented it
