To answer the guestion about the mural... Mohammed is the guy who is in two pieces. His bottom half is being eaten, while his upper half is... I'm not quite sure what's going on with his upper half. I'm not quite sure I want to know...

Wouldn't you brag about having sex with 'The Prophet' even if you didn't?

And like Zo said, it was an orphan of his good friend. So he married her for political reasons. To safeguard her, and to show that people should show compassion for good friends (and the whole like). Mohammed was a master politician, so I'd think part was definetly politics.

According to Christian teaching, Mohammed is in Hell. Why should they *****-foot around that fact? ANyway, it's an historical painting and art-work. It should stay, and the Moslems protesting this should find someone else's church to bother.

I don't know about that, che. If the Muslim community made a comparable gesture to the Christian community, I'm sure that they could be persuaded to remove the painting.

should he be in hell? i don't know, but here's an explanation on why he most probably is in hell.
A friend of mine emailed it to me a long time ago, so you may already know it, but enjoy anyway

quote:
A must read for the science buffs out there.

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington
chemistry mid term. The answer was so "profound" that the professor shared
it with colleagues, which is why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as
well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs
heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law, (gas
cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some
variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need
to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are
leaving.
I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not
leave.

Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell,
lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of
these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you
will go to Hell.

Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not
belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in
Hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law
states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the
same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell
breaks loose.

2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of
souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell
freezes over.

So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan during my
Freshman year, "...that it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with
you.", and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in
having sexual relations with her, then, #2 cannot be true, and thus I am
sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze.

The student received the only "A" given.

Not that I've ever heard, though I am sure you can find somebody to crawl out from under a rock and say so. There's plenty enough to clean up right at hand without presuming the condemnation of others.

And what do we do with The Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel, where Michaelangelo painted himself as flayed alive and going to Hell for being a homosexual?

Pass the white out?

A lot people think anyone that is not of their religion belongs there. Just not many are willing to say it outloud. I know at least some Catholics think all non-Catholics will go to hell. Its not a clear Church doctrine but its not clear non-Catholics aren't going there either. I mention this because I can't recall hearing it when I was still Catholic but I ran across a debate on this issue while searching for something else on the internet.

I don't think you have to turn over rocks in Mohammed's case. Its hard to find someone that thinks well of him that is not Islamic.

Ethelred, I agree.

I wonder if any who condemned the recent spate of pedophilia cases by Catholic priests were Moslems. They have no right to speak on this subject given Mohammed's track record.

Ditto their criticism of the Crusades. Mohammed both preached and conducted jihad to spread the faith.

Bush has declared Islam to be a peaceful religion. But across the world today, the only thing that is seems to be preached and taught by perhaps a majority of Islamic religious leaders is hate.

If there ever was a peaceful Islam, it soon will be gone.

Once, not long ago, the Catholic religion officially held that one could not go to heaven unless he was a Catholic. The current Pope has changed all that by reaching out to other religions. This Pope has done a lot for world peace and harmony.

The world of Islam needs a leader like Pope John Paul II - desparately.

"Nulla salus extra ecclesia" - no salvation outside church was a catholic doctrine for centuries. With an exception for faithful Jews living before the advent of Christ, because they obviously couldn't follow him. (Ignoring the fact that there are many others who never have had a chance to learn about Jesus ...)

A little bit suprising with this poll- the Atheists seem far more tolerant of this painting then the Christians were.

I actually agree with AH on this. The people who said it is a Christian doctine that Mohammed is in hell are not correct. The bible does say "Judge not lest ye be judge". We humans here on Earth have no authority to say who is in hell and who isn't. The only person the Catholic Church actually says is in Hell is Judas.

However, this painting is of historical value. It shows thought of the time and is of great value to art historians. Therefore, it should not be destroyed as many of the Moslems want. But such an intolerant and judging painting also doesn't belong in a house of God.

It says a lot of things that contradict each other. It says the only way to Heaven is through Jesus. Mohammed as a non-follower fails that Heaven test.

It also says that works are needed and in another place that they are not needed. So I guess Mohamed is Damned if he did and Damned if he didn't.

And for those that think only belief is needed then Hitler goes to Heaven as he was believer and Mohammed goes to Hell because he was not. Of course what is called Hell in the English translation is occasionaly Gehenna in the Greek, which was a garbage dump outside Jerusalem.
