quote: Greek Explosion Injures Man
Sat Jun 29,10:21 PM ET
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A bomb exploded outside a ticketing office in the Greek port of Piraeus on Saturday night, injuring a man, police said.
Explosives disposal experts defused a second unexploded device in the area, and found a hand grenade and a revolver near the injured man, police said.
Authorities said they were investigating whether the injured man had been carrying the bomb when it detonated outside the ticketing office of a hydrofoil company that runs passenger trips to the Aegean islands.
The office was closed at the time but the port area was busy.
It was the second time in less than two weeks that an explosive was detonated in Piraeus.
On June 17, a hand grenade damaged the political office of a retired basketball star, who is now a socialist lawmaker in parliament. A group calling itself the Popular Resistance claimed responsibility. |

It is either Popular Resistance or The Revolutionary Cores.
I told you 17 November doesn't make such childish mistakes.
They value their rep dearly.

Nothing will happen in the Olympics.
Unlike Atlanta where people lost their lives in terrorist activity (again).
We are not Americans.
Greece has hosted numerous world championships before.

Turkish airport base Insirlik (to the mid east) is hotter for you.
(=sexual pervertion)
your propaganda washes off like a mid summer rose water stream.
Still no answer for Greece having hosted numerous world championships without any incident (unlike USA)... why's that I wonder?
Could it be you are full of....

Also if you stopped trolling for a minute,
don't think that no terrorist cares about Greece and that's why we are so tranquile....
Greece's position in the gateway of Europe and close to Middle East produces the ideal "entrance" for numerous islamist terrorist organizations.
We had to fight long and hard to get rid of those in the '80s. And we managed to do that without loosing almost not one Greek.
So I wouldn't call us exactly unexperienced.
about 17N, yes, it is unbelievable that not one man got busted so far. And there are reasons for that as I explained. Don't think it makes me "happy" that they are not caught.
But that does not take anything away from our counter - terrorist adequacies.
And I'd appreciate it if people who have lost thousands to terrorists didn't pretend to be experts on such issues.
and lastly about 17N. CIA, FBI, Scotland Yard, Greek Intelligence Agency and half the world are on their tail.
I think that you are the one who is underestimating them and justify it all in the accomodating incompetence chapter.

quote: Greek Bomb Site Gun May Be Stolen
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Europe's most elusive terrorist group may have possessed a gun found at the site of a botched bombing at the country's busiest port, Greek police indicated Monday.
A forensics report on a .38-caliber revolver found at the scene of Saturday's blast showed it was stolen from a police officer killed during a 1984 robbery that authorities blame on November 17, Greece's most-wanted terrorist group.
The weapon had not been used in any crime since then, and it was unclear how long the bomber — who was injured in Saturday's blast and remains under police guard — possessed it.
November 17 never claimed responsibility for robbing and killing the police officer in 1984. But authorities said a gun used to kill the police officer also was used in six other attacks between 1983 and 1997 blamed on November 17.
November 17, which blends extreme left-wing politics with nationalism, is named for the date of a 1973 student uprising against the military dictatorship then ruling Greece.
It has killed 22 people, including four U.S. officials, since emerging in 1975 with the killing of the CIA ( news - web sites)'s Athens station chief, Richard Welch. No arrests have been made.
The group's last victim was British military attache Brig. Stephen Saunders, shot dead on June 8, 2000. Britain's Scotland Yard and U.S. authorities are working with Greek police to track down group members.
The policeman's revolver was found near the injured bomber — identified as Savas Xiros, a 40-year-old icon painter from Thessaloniki — after the time bomb he allegedly was carrying Saturday night exploded as he walked past a busy dock in the port of Piraeus.
A second bomb found nearby was defused. Police also found two hand grenades and a set of keys at the scene.
Xiros, who did not have a criminal record, was under heavy police guard in an Athens hospital Monday.
The target of Saturday's bombs remains unclear, but the incident occurred at the beginning of Greece's tourist season.
Police Chief Fotis Nassiakos refused to comment on whether police suspect Xiros was connected to November 17.
Greece is being pressured to crack down on terrorism ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games ( news - web sites) in Athens and has been criticized internationally for failing to make any significant arrests. |
