I should also mentioned the FBI has already classified this as a isolated incident.

The FBI is afraid to classify this as a terract for fear of causing additional fear in the general population and they don't want to offend middle easterners.

us govt is alarming its citizens all the time so that if something bad happens it can say 'we told ya, we did our best' and if something minor happens like this time they get confused...

Yup (to Dissident). Even if we assume that he targetted El Al, it doesn't mean that it was terrorist in nature. It would have to be a part of some political strategy to qualify as such. If he was just a looney who got pissed at his employer, but also didn't like Jews, then it's just a hate crime...

There's a reason we have different words for the two types of crime.

One is a part of a political strategy, the other is not.

If I beat a gay man to death because I hate gays, then it's a hate crime. If I kill gays to make them afraid to "come out", and thus change the political landscape regarding gay rights, then it's terrorism. See the difference?

CNN is now saying that the attacker is an Egyptian national who has been living in the U.S. for several years. This makes it much more likely that the attack was a terrorist attack, though it looks like this guy may have operated alone.

I suppose that definition works as well, though the suicidal nature of the attack seems to indicate that the attacker was hoping to achieve an objective which was worth more than his own life. In my opinion most hate crimes are conducted against helpless targets for the amusement and / or aggrandizement of the perpetrators. Getting killed isn't usually part of the plan, as it cuts down considerably on bragging time. This one has more of a Jihad flavor. Legally I imagine it could be prosecuted either way, though any prosecution would obviously only involve a co-conspirator.

True enough, though usually they go after people they know or places that they are really familiar with, often work or school. I doubt this guy had a workplace grievance against El Al. I'm not confident enough with the apparent facts of this matter to comfortably place it in any particular category yet, though the odds are pointing toward an attack in sympathy with the Jihad against Israel. I would call that terrorism as it would be action meant to terrorize in order to achieve a political goal. The action may well be simultaneously political and racist.

A wittness claims that the gunman wore an el-al badge and yelled something about losing his workplace.

Someone claimed that he used to work for El-Al , but that is unlikely given that El-Al employs Israelis.


As far as "being offended by American patriotism" well I guess it's against Allah to display the American flag.

It's the most stupid arguement and it's sad that I know that some unversalist lefties buy into this.
