SISKO Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Sisko takes number one because DS9 was the most creative of the Star Trek series, also the most B5-like I might add.

B5 was so much better because it was more realistic and more creative at the same time. Actually, I think it was B5's realism which forced it to be more creative. In Star Trek all the races basically look the same, just with funny looking faces. B5 has different races with entirely different biological makeups. Witness the Vorlons or the Shadows, other species requireing encounter suites, and my favorites, the beings from Thirdspace . That was a cool movie with a cool premise.

In ST they all have basically the same ships, warp drive, phasers.. yada yada. In B5 they push the creative envelope, which I like.

Sisko and Janeway did come around when Clinton was telling us to "don't stop thinking about trommorow".

And Picard reminds me of Big Bush. They both have a simple resoluteness about them. If you think about some of Bush's statements on Iraq during the Gulf War, I could easily see Picard saying the same lines.

Archer gives speeches just like Bush, somewhat akward (from bad acting) moralizing. Then there's the suliban or whatever

Ever watch the Smeg Ups (Or was it the Outs?) with Picard talking about how he was thinking of suing Grant Naylor?

That was hilarious.

I didn't know what smeg was the first time I saw it. I heard of smegma. Never put two and two together until reading this one story with a character that was nicknamed "Smegs" though.

2 answers (sort of)

1) http://www.startrek.com/library/xeno.asp?ID=119943

2) The origin of the Borg is not known AFAIK. However, Q "introduced" the Borg to Enterprise D at stardate 42761. Maybe that´s what you´re thinking of?

I think Janeway made a decent captain once the writing got a lot better in the fourth season and she lost that horrid bun hairstyle.

And DS9 was a flagrant rip-off of B5. But also good.

Kirk is the man.

Picard was such a wuss he couldn't even take Soren, and ended up getting Kirk killed and his ship destroyed by a half-assed bird of prey.

Sisco was OK if somewhat preachy, Archer is so-so, Janeway was annoying.

BTW, Data also qualifies as captain, as seen in "Redemption PartII".

James T Kirk
Jean-Luc Picard
Benjamin Sisko
Katherine Janeway
Jonathan Archer

I voted for Kirk because I grew up with him. I was 23 years old when the show started. He would have a lot more votes if most of you were my age.

Picard a close second, and I mean close.

Sisko and Janeway are both very good in my world.

Archer is doing OK but needs to win a few fights.

I understand how hard it is to watch a show of today and then try to compared it with a show of 1967/68/69. That is 35 years ago.

Maybe Archer is the show that was going to be made in 1972/3 but was never made.

I grew up with the Next Gen. Only Picard will ever personify, to me, what Star Trek is supposed to be about. I guess I'd have felt the same about Kirk had I been that vintage.

As for the others, Sisko is a warmonger, Janeway is the victim of a series devoid of soul and Archer.... well.... Enterprise has too many continuity errors for me to even consider Archer to be part of the Star Trek Universe. I prefer to think of Enterprise as being part of the Babylon 5 franchise.

No, the lost series have nothing to do with Enterprise. some scripts and ideas have been used in star trek movies, and The Next Generation though (like the ep in which Troy got pregnant).

I also grew up with Kirk.... OK, I´m not THAT old They aired TOS in swedish TV in the late ´70s. (Alongside 'Space:1999' ) But still, Picard is one of the few human characters in ST that has some real substance. The human characters in ST are often 2-dimensional characters that doesn´t leave a lasting impression If you made a top 10 list of interesting characters in ST Picard would be the only human.

Yes they did. The main reason why B5 is better IMO is because it had a clearly defined storyline, beginning and end. It´s basically one long story divided into little pieces. This also allows for a better and more free handling of the various characters.

ST sucks bigtime in this department. Nothing truly surprising really happens here...

I must agree fully- Kirk was a one note guy, any bad guy worth a damn would easily be able to lure him into a trap just by keeping in mind he is such a macho guy- no finess. Picard did recite Shakespeare, but was no wimp (the whole intellectua=pansy thing just never dies).

I must say that the whole 2 dimensional thing goes for ST alien species too- which is why B5 was better: all the races had a rich culture and many contradictions and internal conflicts, things races in ST lack utterly. The only race that got any worthwhile treatment were the Bajorians, due to DS9's format.
