All Republics except Belarus are going toward Europe and are running from Russia. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania has nothing common now with Russia.
Now President Kwasniewski is on 3 day OFFICIAL meeting with president Bush, which is second OFFICIAL meeting in Bush presidency after Mexican president. It means very lot. President Bush agreed that Poland will be the representative of East European Nations in their way to NATO... It is a facts. Ukrainian president Leonid Kuczma are one of th best friends of our president Kwasniewski. Ukraine is going to Europe and in several years will join EU and NATO. Poland will be the great partner of Ukraine in its way to Europe and will help significiently Ukraine to do this. We play a great role in helping Ukraine to change direction into democratic European way. Our specialists from political marketing teach our Ukrainian partners how to win elections etc. That is way Juszczenko Blog won the elections to the parliament. I was talking several times with polish specialists from political advertise who travels to Ukraine very often to help Ukrainian democratic politics, and he says that in Western Ukraine people hate Russia and they see Poland and Europe as the only chance for the Ukraine.
Russia now is in the state of poverty, and you will have to do many things to overcome the difficulties you have... Poland now is the state which has so far better economy that Russia, that it is not possible to equalize this distance

Russia has 250 mld$ GDP with 144 millions people
It is a quite big difference... We are almost richer with the same amount of people.

Litwa (Lithuania) was a part of Polish(-Lithuanian) state for centuries and Wilno/Vilnius was
one of major centres of Polish(-Lithuanian) culture. Lithuania doesn't want to have anything to
do with its past and proved it by resurrecting Lithuanian language. Eastern Lithuania didn't want
to resign of all its tradition, and it felt it has more to do with other Poles than with neolithuanian

I think the Poles joined Nato and seek to join the EU because they feel part of the West - they are a Roman Catholic nation.
I still do not understand why the Ukraine would want to join either Nato or the EU. They are brothers of the Russians and share the Orthodox faith or at least their traditions. I do not see Russia becoming part of the EU, but forming its own "commonwealth" with other Slavic and Orthodox nations.
I think this because of the obvious Russian national pride, and also because the Russian Orthodox church remains extremely hostile to the Pope.
I beleive, for example, that Serbia remains strongly in the Russian camp.

Didn't Russia recently express a desire to join NATO? If so, could putting ouy feelers about joining the EU be far behind?

Well... Ukraine has more common with Poland then with Russians. Ukraine started to be under Russian control since XVII century, and in XIX, and XX century Ukraine was conquered by Russians. Russians always wanted ro rusificate this territory, but as their culture is rather poor "colonoization" of Ukraine was not so easy. Still many Ukrainians are a bit nationalistic, antirussian and directed toward Western, Latin civilization. I have to say that Ukraine was in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth longer time then under Russian control. Almost all cultural achievments are from that times.
So I think it is time to bring back Ukraine into European Society, and pull out Ukraine from Russian hands.
And dear Americans... remember that we, Poles are your friends because we want it, and Russians are your friend because they must. And we Poles always were your friends, even when our country had to cooperate with Soviet Union.

And one more time to GDP numbers measured in PPP style. One year ago, CIA stated that Russia has GDP about 650 mld $ PPP, now it has 1.12 trillion $ PPP... Did you have almost 100% growth, or Putin started to be good to USA?
And www.worldbank.com is cruel... And they have political resons in their asses... The athlas method says... Russia has 250 mld $ GDP. It is almost like in African countries. I bet that many Africans live better then in Russian province, where vodka is the most precious article
