US Army creates a computer game as a recruitment tool Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

http://www.americasarmy.com/

"Little Billy was bored. He had already defeated America's Army at the hardest level in single-player, and he was the total king of the field in multiplayer. His mod project wasn't advancing, either, since he couldn't decide whether to concentrate on textures of PlasmaBlaster or on his planned Martian jungles. He decided to check the America's Army site to see if there was anything new happening.

"What's this?" Billy wondered. "An add-on? Gulf War add on? Official? With AIR FORCE? Oh man, I gotta try this!" Soon he had downloaded the Gulf War add-on and installed it. Tutorials on flying were easy enough, and soon little Billy was flying on Iraqi skies. Bombing mission, with Billy flying some kind of a fighter plane even Billy couldn't recognize. "Probably that new model Army has been keeping secret" Billy thought. Iraqi air-force proved no match to him, and soon he saw his mission target, Saddam's palace. He saw that the bombers could drop their bombs, and watched the desolation ("Amazing realism!") until he had to start flying back.

From the living room, his father was calling. CNN was reporting live from Baghdad. "You better come see this, Billy" his father shouted."

Answer to your next question is: "Yes, I've read that".

There are two games, actually. America's Army and another one whose name escapes me at the moment.

Frankly, I'd much rather our tax dollars go to create free video games than bombs.

They are, too. I feel the same way about any advertisement or reqruitments schemes for the military. 'though this is a bit more dubious then television ads, in my opinion.

No, I'd rather they didn't use propaganda.

I wonder why it's OK when it's your own governments propaganda - but as soon as you start talking about things like the Hilter Youth, or Jihad for Kids, it's wrong?

Jon: Exactly.

What is the goal of the US Army propaganda? To get people to volunteer for the Army, but showing them what they do. How is this like Hitler Youth's propaganda? This smacks of an analogy that doesn't fit.

Exactly, they want people in the army. They are reqruiting kids to kill and die on their behalf, to become loyal serveants to their government - just like the Hitler Youth or Jihad for Kids.

This is what propaganda is, it is the same no matter who is doing it.
I suppose the fact that most people don't mind their own governments propaganda while at the same time being outraged at the propaganda of their enemies is a testimony to how well it works.

You are too funny. Of course TV Advertising and Video Games are the same thing as constant bombardment of a certain view. Unless you have a channel that only consists of US military commericals, you are just being silly.

And what is so wrong with propaganda, no matter what form it is in? You going to ban companies advertising as well?

edit: One of the major differences is that Hitler Youth and Jihad for Kids is aimed toward KIDS. US Army propaganda is aimed for 17-25 year olds. BIG difference.

Actually, in terms of recruiting. This pays off.

It didnt cost much in the way of taxes. You dont have to hire anyone, the army has there own programmers. The army also has there own CD manufacturing centers and publishers.

So was it a waste? I dont think so. I think it pays off when people Join up.

As for non-us getting ahold of it. Who cares? Go on Kazaa I can get anything from anywhere.
