A reply to whoever asked about the military strength of Morocco: I visited the country last year for 5 weeks, and was most of the times in the Western Sahara, which is essentially occupied territory (think Palestine) by the Moroccans. Their military strength is huge, especially in the Sahara. I can't say how modern their army is, but in shear numbers I guess they'll match Spain easily. Those bluehelmets have some function there, they 'try to pacify the region' since 1975 (If only they would do something, instead of spending dollars on whiskey in 5 star hotels).
Not only was Spain the first country to colonize Morocco before they traded it to France, they are also the biggest supporters of Polisario, the main resistance movement of the region. Okay, there has been little armed conflict in the Sahara the past years, but diplomatically the tensions are growing.
This could very well have been a move by Hassan II to shift attention from the Western Sahara even more, and far from the joke people think it is. Sure, a tiny island of little strategic importance can only be a provocation, but I guess that was exactly what they tried to do: Morocco is Europe minded, and has very good relations with France, but due to the support of Polisario there is not one 'true' Moroccan who likes Spain. Conflict within the EU on the issue could have been the only goal...

Hmm. Will there be a new reconquista, this time from the other side?
Yeah, right. The islands are spanish. Morrocoo's 2nd biggest trading partner is Spain. Spain has the support of the rest of the EU, and (god knows why it would need it) America. Morroco has words of encouragement from the arab league.

"EU offers Spain only half-hearted backing
BRUSSELS, July 17 (Reuters) - The European Union offered Spain only half-hearted backing on Wednesday after its armed forces ousted Moroccan troops from a disputed island, with France apparently the most reluctant to give its support.
European Commission President Romano Prodi failed conspicuously to endorse the bloodless action to retake Perejil island off Morocco's Mediterranean coast, a day after the Brussels EU executive had called for a diplomatic solution.
When EU ambassadors met to discuss a common stance, diplomats said France, the former colonial master in most of Morocco, prevented the 15-nation Union issuing a joint statement.
A statement from Prodi he wanted to facilitate a dialogue between the two nations. He later issued a second statement clarifying that he was not offering to be a mediator.
"The Commission is concerned about events on Perejil island. It is now time to return to the status quo ante and to resume dialogue between Spain and Morocco," Prodi told reporters. Neither statement made any mention of the military action.
The French argued it was a bilateral matter, not a dispute between the EU and Morocco and there had already been too many statements, the diplomats said.
Moroccan soldiers set up a camp on the uninhabited island last Thursday in what Rabat said was increased patrolling against human traffickers and drug smugglers.
Spain informed its EU partners about the military recapture of the rocky outcrop, stressed it did not intend to keep troops on the island and was willing to enter a dialogue with Rabat to maintain fruitful relations, one diplomat said.
"They want a solution through dialogue and all the EU partners welcomed this," he said.
In Madrid, Spanish Foreign Minister Ana Palacio said Madrid's objective was also to return to the status quo ante with Morocco over the island and that it would remove its troops as soon as possible.
Morocco has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Spanish troops. "

Deepo, as far as I know. Morrocco has a very large military. Im not sure of the specifics, if someone could grab a link for future reference.
I dont know much about the nation. Other than the island disputes. Ive heard its very liberal for that part of the world. Again, I doubt it will lead to war. Im not laughing either, its a serouis matter. But these things happen, wars happen, disputes happen.
