If he wanted revenge, he has opportunity to kill this soldier before. They meet face to face with each other several minutes earlier. But at this moment this guy was crying and was absolutely helpless and the German soldier could easily kill him, but he didn't.
This guy killed him later not because of revenge, but because German recognised him and said his name.
He was afraid that he could tell to Americans that this guy didn't fought, that he din't bring ammo to his freinds and that he is the reason why his freinds were killed. |
There were no Brits in Saving Private Ryan. The invasion beaches were seperated by nationality and by miles. The British and Commonwealth forces were located on the north of the front, and the Americans on the south. The soldier who froze under fire was a translator from the 1st Infantry Division, the same Division as the rest of the squad that went after Ryan. He shot "Steamboat Willie" because he realized that it was a mistake to let him go earlier, and because of his own shame.
In the opening scene I thought the two "German" prisoners who were killed by the Jewish guy were Russians or Ukrainians who had been captured early in the war and defected to the Germans. There were many of these guys manning the defenses at Normandy, and they created quite a stir when they didn't fold immediately. In the movie the GIs don't understand what they were trying to say, and then shoot them.
If you are interested in an excellent short history of the Normandy campaign I recommend the one by Max Hastings. I have read a lot of history and military history, but this is the best short history I have ever seen. It tackles grand strategy, operational level, tactics and manages to spend the vast majority of it's time at the level of personal experiences. That's an amazing accomplishment because it does all of this well, clearly and concisely.

Another WWII pissing match? Seriously, I thought we'd had this one out. Serb, as you well know, the American posters here do not attempt to take away from the contributions of the USSR (or UK, or anyone else for that matter) in the war. In fact, the posters in this thread have affirmed that. Your bluster, which is wildly exaggerated, as you damn well know, does not change people's minds - it makes you look nuts. An American who claims that America won WWII all by itself is likewise considered to be an idiot. It was a team effort, with each ally leaning on the others. Saving Private Ryan was a Hollywood movie about American soldiers. It made no attempt to say that the US won the war solo: it was a fictional snippet of the Normandy campaign. The soldiers were all Americans, including the cowardly little interpreter, and the only reference to another ally was actually a denegration of Field Marshall Montgomery (the Americans *****ing about him being slow to take Caen), so if anyone should be complaining, it should be the Brits.
So ENOUGH!, all of you, at least discuss the bloody topic!

Thank you, arrian.
Victor: It is concievable that the other allies may have won the european war, with american supplies. Still, the U.S. is a necessary component of allied victory. I don't know if, after defeating Hitler, the Soviets and Brittish would then be capable of taking on the japanese. Most likely, they would have been forced to call a ceasefire, because the casualties in the earlier war would have been too atrocious. The british were more or less out of the picture by the fall of singapore in february 1942. Also, without a cross-channel invasion, or operation Husky in sicily, the whole of europe would have been under soviet control.
A side note: The steel of which I spoke was made by russians. American corporations went in to help the soviets create high-quality steel. They brought technology and manufacturing techniques. I was not implying that the soviet steel all came from the U.S.
And serb: There were tens of thousands of strategic bombers based in england.

The three greatest American authors are Southerners: Twain, Faulkner, and Poe. Almost all of our music comes from the South: Gospel, Folk, Blues, Jazz, Rock n'Roll. The folks are a darn sight friendlier down here than up in the icy North. I see far more interracial friendships and relationships here than in the North, and I live in a city with half the percentage of Black folks as Chicago (25% as opposed to 47%), though I will admit this may be due to the major military presence here, which is the most integrated institution in America.
I love the South. I'm torn between moving back home to Chicago where my friends and family are, and staying here and enjoying the mild winters and palm trees and friendly people. The best beer joints I've ever been to in the whole freakin' country are here in Jax.
I miss the multitude of cultures in Chicago. I definately miss the food. I miss the different things I can do in a big city, (which is why I'm looking into a position in Atlanta).
Interestingly enough, though, the South is the most "European" part of the US. Europe, and much of the old world in fact, is very much living through its past. The South, also, lives through its past. In some ways, it can't get over losing the war or the Civil Rights movement. In the North, the MidWest, and the West Coast, the country is in the eternal present. There is no past, only the Now. America lives in the Now and always looking forward, never back. Our history is just dusty stories. The South is still living its history, even as it is hurled into the Now. It must be very schizophrenic being a Southerner.

if by "american way of life" they mean elections that's because of democracy nothing to do with america in particular.
if I was to talk about an intrusion of american way of life I would say... consumerism maybe?
that's again harly an american sui generis |
Foolish Paik. The movies, music, fashion, values, etc. are all facets of America.
Our evil scheme to conquer the world through hollywood is triumphing at last!
Edit: Oh, and your far right greek nationalism is pathetic. We lost the war against the Vietcong, true (although largely because of a lack of will on America's part).
But we weren't the ones who couldn't beat the turks in the aftermath of ww1, when they were defeated and their empire torn asunder by revolts.

Enough with the WWII crap already! |
Why? You can argue that if the USA hadn't intervened, the Germans would still have lost. That's probably the case, although the 40 divisions hitler had guarding the west coast might've made a difference.
But if the Germans lose, who wins? The Brits can't mount a successful invasion. So we end up with a Russia whose iron curtain resides in the channel, not germany. Damned if I can see the improvement over Nazi Germany there.

-Haha... try to sell me the idea of Southern culture, while I am at Oxford, I like the notion, but it pales in comparison to anything I could consider a propper culture.

-The climate is downright awful.

-Yeah, they have things in common with Europe, but the south is populated by very many conservative rednecks, who would call European conservatives commies. The south also has very pathetic mass transit networks, and urban areas are very thinly populated by European standards. New England is far more European than the South.

-I can... not much, but at least Stalin's purges were not done by ethnicity.
