We fought a war on our territory that costed at least 650,000 lives. It was called the Civil War. If I remember correctly, Civil War killed more Americans than all the WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War combined. And Atlanta was completely destroyed during the war.
North Vietnam was very lucky that it got tremendous helps from both China and USSR. It also got a very smart leadership that understood how to exploit popular sentiment in a democratic state. They successfully painted the US government as the bully and the aggressor in their own people's eyes. It was war weariness that costed the US the war, not the military prowess of the NVA.
However, had the North Vietnamese been as stupid and violent as OBL, America would have fought them to the bitter end and would kick their butts into the ground, just like the Japanese some 25 years ago.
In a sense, you understand Americans just as little as the Japanese politicians 60 years ago. You probably think that Americans are wimps because we always care about our people's lives so much. But you fail to realize that if there is a cause for war, America and its people are the most dangerous and persistant enemy you will ever encounter.

WELL SAID, Lord Merciless. *applaud* . You got the military/geopolitical implictions across exactly. And it is correct the statistic you gave about deaths in the Civil War.

The idea of a "free-for-all" is pretty ridiculous. Why would all alliances break down simultaneously? The only way such a situation could happen is if a major network sponsored the thing as "reality TV" and every nation in the world just happened to be bored enough (there's nothing good on TV, ma) to go along.
Please define "win".

Gaining territory, gaining lost cities, gaining revenge, eliminating/reducing the threat etc etc
For you to understand, the definition of "win" would be the rooting out of Al Qaeda. There are always "wins". (and then they are never)
There's always cause for war.
And peace is so much more difficult anyway.

if they misbehave I might even let lose some Enrique Iglesias on them (but that might be a bit too cruel...)
