No, but I have a very, very, very low opinion of any person who chooses to live in the US and not learn English first. My opinion of them drops even lower when they don't teach their kids English before any other language.

doc,
what you need to understand is that the democratic party has learned that the path to political power is to pit the various segments of our population against what was at one time the core of our nation...WASPs.
they have systematically peeled off layer after layer and portrayed each segment as victims....blacks versus the WASPs, indians versus the WASPs, gays versus the WASPs, women versus the suddenly all male WASPs, union members versus the WASPs, students versus the WASPs, environmentalists versus the WASPs, urban persons versus the WASPs, handicapped persons versus the WASPs, etc ad nauseum.
All of these groups vote democratic because they have bought into the myth that only the democratic party stands between them and oppression by tryanical WASPists.
They even diluted the military vote by piting veterans versus the WASPs.
Now of course as soon as someone starts to complain about this language measure they will use it to inflame the fear of the WASPs among all those who speak English as a second language.
Melting pot? The only thing melting in America is the Republican party which will probably be extinct within 20 years. And surely replaced by a socialist party even farther to the left than the liberals we have to deal with now.

And if the democrats had their way you would only need a green card or a passport to vote and they would run ferrys and buses from Mexico and Canada on election day.

quote: This is exactly what my great grandparents did, they lived in a russian community and my grandfather went into kindergarden speaking barely any english. This happens with every new wave of immigration, assimilation takes a generation or two just give it time and the current hispanic wave will be borged just like every one that came before it |
But my point is that people should not come to America if they can't speak English first. Just basic politeness, I would think. I wouldn't emigrate to China without first learning Chinese, and neither should a Mexican come to the US without learning English.

It's DocFeelGood? Where have you been man?
Anyway, I agree with Dave Floyd wholeheartedly. This is not the 18th century where people were forced to immigrate because they were slaves or criminals... if someone comes here and makes this country their new home, they should have at least some sort of respect for this country by at least learning the language! And a true citizen of this country must at least be able to speak the language of this country!
Democracy is a political system that thrives because of a certain level of free flow of information and public discussion. Democracy can not survive if the population can not communicate with each other... and it's far easier for a minority of immigrants to learn english then the majority to learn a myriad of languages. Immigrants should conform to us... not us to them...
thanks

Docfeelgood, I'm sorry, I speak only english, not American english. Can I still come? .
I agree with most of you. If a person wants to come there for good, he/she should learn the language. It should be a top priority! I wouldn't want to live in some place, if I wouldn't understand what others speak or read the local papers. To some it can be a big job to learn a new language, but at least people should try hard to learn it.
But I wouldn't send someone away because of it, what better way to learn is there than come and live in the place? Maybe there should be a system, that when you come in, they test your abilities. Then they'll give you a new appointment time, lets say in a year. Then you take that test again if you failed the first time. After you've been living in the country for a year, and tried hard to learn the language.. I think only few would fail, maybe some old people.
