I was going to try to get a conversation started up about whether the previous posters still felt that Activision was more dedicated to the online community than Firaxis.

I guess from now I will just ask outright from the start instead of trying first spark interest and then steer the conversation......

Hehe he does seem pretty fast most of the time. Maybe we should start referring to him as the Ming collective........perhaps that explains his post count.......he assimilated them from mods who mysteriously disappeared.

Considering my poltically charged posts in the OTF I have never been banned.

Considering my 20+ post count per day I have never gotten a PCR.

But I've been close to being banned and been in threads where people have gotten PCRs so I've been hanging on the edge

plus, people who troll or spam or do stuff to provoke the moderators are really silly, I mean, what do you gain from provoking people you don't know hiding behind anonymity? Just a waste of time if you ask me. Just makes you look like a childish jerk.

The reverse is true. Some moderators take their job too seriously as if supreme power in these forums equated to supreme power in RL too. But I will admit, other sites are MUCH WORSE.

Actually, if you are quick enough you can edit the post before mySQL registers it and it isn't shown in the post that it was edited.

Same with thread titles.

So I presume the database connectivity code has a cleanup function... A hardcoded timer might delete all orphans, and update all edits, etc. It's a usual way (not the best, though) to manage things in message systems, and it might be the part that causes the delay. I am currently working on such a message system myself, and that's the reason why I started the thread about hacking the polling system. (in which was of course moderated) Not that I wanted to hack Apolyton, I just wanted to discuss security issues.

I started a similar discussion on a newspaper internet forum, and it was of course moderated when some badguy hacker replied. I discussed security issues with the badguy, and after some days I got an angry mail from the manager. I explained my harmless intentions to him, and told him the importance of tapping the badguys' knowledge... Things got settled, he was ok, and he didn't punish me.
So I guess it's kinda taboo. Hehe...

Yeah, Area19 is the hidden Apolyton forum, in which not even the owners can locate. Area25 is basically the same, but with the code transparency v1.25 patch... It's the ultimate selfmodifying vBulletin, kinda living it's own life within Apolyton. Wanna join us there?

Not quite true... the so called "hidden forums" were just forums that used to exist, but the Owners have taken off the main menu because they were no longer used. However, people could still access them with direct addresses... They were not "hacked" or created by outsiders... One could say that they just weren't closed properly. Now they are

vBulletin uses a MySQL back end, and forum creation and modification is through an entirely different set of scripts which regular users have no way of accessing.

You'd have to hack the MySQL database on the server.

That's an configuration function - you can set whether the "edited by" field appears at all, and a time delay from initial post before it appears. IIRC, it's set at 5 minutes (300 seconds).

You can also set whether an admin or mod's edit shows that they've edited it. That's set on.

Hmm... I didn't know that, I though all posts had that "edited by" line after your 2nd edit. I had noticed that if I edited a post once, that line wouldn't show, but after all other edits it did....

that was one of Poly's greatest mysteries to me!
