It's official- Bush asks congress for declaration of war on Iraq Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Sorry if this has already been posted, I tried to scour the boards as best I can for a similar topic. But in any event, Bush has now asked congress for approval to remove Sadaam Huseein from Iraq. I wonder what will happen if he doesn't get approval? Will congress even have the courage to try to defy Bush?

We're actually going to declare war this time? Shocking. Good to see Bush follow the Constitution in this matter though.

well, at least he's starting to listen to common sense...

now, all he has to do is convince the public, and convince the allies.

that's one of the reasons why vietnam was so divisive-- the people who went didn't know why, nor did the people who stayed behind.

bush is finally starting to take that to heart.

I don't know what Bush is going to say to justify a war, but let me tell you that I have had nightmares about this guy, Saddam, ever since Rumsfeld told us how a small jar of anthrax could kill thousands and effectively disrupt and an entire American city for years. Such jars of anthrax can easily be hidden from weapons inspectors.

Saddam could really cause major damage to us, England and Israel.

He's not asking for a DoW. He's asking for something like the Gulf of Tonkin resolution or the Gulf War congressional thumbs up. Neither one is a DoW as defined by the constitution.

Yes congress will approve. But it will be more important as to how the American people respond. If the majority of people don't approve, I think Bush will have to think twice in an election year.

I would have thought that you would have argued the approval from Congress was a necessity. Why the thumbs down on a promise to ask for that approval?

It's a thumbs down to the whole concept of military action against Iraq, period.

And Congressional approval is not all that is required - Congress must actually DECLARE WAR before we can attack anyone.

Saddam isn't a threat to get ICBMs anytime in any of our lifetimes.

DD,

And hence all of the military actions we've fought without a declaration of war were illegal.

Q,

No, but that was an illegal use of military force.

To cover their asses if everything goes FUBAR. They can blame it on the President if a "police action" or whatever they'll define it as this time around if we lose or if many American soldiers are killed.

As for the seeking Congressional approval thing, I'm sure it's a backdoor to make sure that there will be money available beyond, IIRC, the 60 days Bush needs to declare war if he were to order airstrikes against Iraq.
