While The Great Dictator is one of the best movies ever, this banner is simply bad.

The movie:
Chaplin's work is a masterpiece of art. Chaplin had a hard time when he finally decided to release it (he nearly decided against it) but it's good he did. The movie successfully showed/shows how facism works. It made people laugh at a time where there was no one laughing at all - warweariness. And it deconstructed Hitler from a horrible enemy to somebody to be laughed at and easily beaten. It's influence on British society at that time was enormous.
Being offended/bad taste:
To make fun of/with Hitler is in my opinion acceptable and often it is really funny. There's no reason anybody should be offended by that. Eg. "La Vita č bella" made fun of concentration camps and even won an oscar, justified. No topic should be off-limits for good fun, simply none!

The proposed banner:
It's bad because it tries to live of the movie, because I can't see any funny statement in it and because there's not even a slight connection between apolyton, buying and Hitler except maybe the fact that it is an order to do something. Anyone that has seen movies of Hitler's speeches knows that he never talked like that, so the banner just doesn't make any sense, it's simply bad.

This discussion between you two is just hilarious but NYE is actually right. You're responsible for what you put up on your site and while it might be not your fault if somebody takes offense it's still your fault, because - and that's the important part - you're in advance accepting the fact that rather a few will be offended by it.
"responsibilty for an offense" as NYE pointed out is a fault. If you just put up something without knowing that people will be offended by it - then you'd just be responsible withoiut any fault on your side.
As I said - the banner is in my opinion not offensiv but just bad. And fortunately both of you are obviously agreeing on my post since you're not answering I'm kidding, so don't feel obliged to do so now, there's a right to ignore.

there have been two types of negative responses to the banner
a) "i dont like it" responses to which i have accepted and never complained about
b) "i'm offended" responses which have come down to be from ignorance of the movie to which all that i have said is "it's a pitty"

what's more obvious?
1. there are people who know who hitler was but don't know about the charly chaplin movie
2. there are people who know about the charly chaplin movie but have no clue about who hitler was.

You can be sure that you will offend people by this banner because it's certainly sure that people will not know about the movie but do know about hitler.

Since it's pretty clear on before that you will offend people, it is your fault if you do it, since that just means you're going to offend people on purpose.

And offending people on purpose is a big fault, unless you think it's cool to offend people. If that's the idea behind the banner, to offend people, go ahead.

If you think that people should know about the movie or are ignorant otherwise, just makes clear that you are ignorant yourself.
