Hmm -- no one in Europe has yet to come out with coin rolls? A roll full of E2 coins would be a nice thing to swap in at a store or bank .

Canada's had $1 and $2 coins for years now. I don't usually have any problem with too many coins -- I limit myself to carrying just 2 of each, along with 4 quarters, in my wallet. Any extras I toss in my coin-bowls in my closet. Roll up the coins once a month or so and you get yourself a bit of bonus money .

I can't figure out why dollar coins refuse to catch on in the U.S. I had no problem using them. I guess they're just considered a Commie plot, like flouridation.

I wish the US dollar was available only as a coin. I hate one dollar bills. The only time I use them is when I have a whole slew of them or at vending machines. The latter is difficult unless the bill was minted 3 days ago.

Dollar coins may catch on if they start making them a different size than the quarter. That and available at places other than the post office.

If people really think that something has less value because it is a coin, they really don't deserve to have money in the first place.

Such simplified mind. Are you an american or something?

Perception, habits and exchange rates can very well lead people to that and it happens everywhere. No problem there if retailers didn't use it to their advantage (blame free markets)

Tired of ads?

No, I am from Mars.

Well, we might as well make all our currency notes then. That way people will value a penny.

How do retailers use it to their advantage? Refuse to accept coins?

I don't think any money is of less value simply becuase it is made of metal. I know four quarters equal one dollar.

People will adjust to the coins soon enough. I'll assume that there are no 1 or 2 euro notes? They'll get used to it. If they don't, they'll just have big piles of 1 and 2 euro coins to roll up and deposit into the bank every month or so.

Coins are SOOOOOOOOO much cheaper to make than notes. Notes need to be replaced much more often that coins. I have coins minted in the 1950s and they are still shiny. I have bills minted in 1998 and look like they've been used as a diaper.

Following that logic coins should be attributed with a higher value than notes, something which clearly isn't happening and would be foolish to happen.

Dollar coins just feel funny to use. I feel like a cheapskate if I pay for something with coins instead of bills, even if they have the same value.

I prefer shrapnel.

And I really don't see how being a coin devalues a currency. I hate £5 notes, they are always old, fading and half-ripped. I would much prefer a £5 coin to a £5 note.

Coins are the way to go. Make the five Euro note a coin!

If they even make the one and two Euro coins into notes it will look even more like that crap it is.

The United States has been trying to move to one dollar coins for years -- first the Suzy B., the Saskewagea (close enough); the Sas just got cancelled for lack of interest -- people just aren't using them.

Problem is, every country has their own ideas about how to partition currency. In Germany, a 50 ? note is just as normal as everything below. Mostly because the 100 DM note was also very normal. In most other countries people tend to get suspicious at that. The 2? coin is even less than 5 DM which we were used to. There was a DM 5 note which you would get once or twice a year, but it wasn't really accepted. One tried to introduce a 200 DM note, but somehow you'd never get them. - I don't know who complained about them, but apparently people did.

I enjoyed very much that on my frequent train trips between Nancy and Cologne, I didn't get any more Belgian/Luxembourg Franc when I bought a meal in Luxembourg main station... And lots of similar things.

Clarification for the dumb witted: when the most worth coin in many countries was only a fraction of the value of the 1 coin euro you tend to subconsiously give the 1 euro coin less worth.

One.

and Two: retailers are taking advantage of that psychological fact.

No 1 and 2 € notes. When I was in the US, I couldn't bear this stupid 1$ notes. Maybe it's just me, but I hate to insert notes everytime I want something from a vending machine.
Plus, notes take much more room than coins, and having notes for smaller values will make our wallets grow terribly bigger. Go with the 5€ coin ! (I can't understand I agreed with Brits on this one)

When notes will lose their real value, they'll lose their values in the mind of people too (remember the German devaluation : nobody said notes were worth something).
But I could see your point if life in Greece was really chepaer than in northern Europe (and wages lower accordingly).
Let's just compare prices : here in France, 20 cigarettes cost about 3€, a litre of gasoline costs arond 1€, a student's flat is aroun 120€. How much is it in Greece ?

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

In the UK 20 cigarettes is €6.75, a litre of petrol is about €1.50 and a students flat is about €300 a month - depending on what part of the country you are in. More in expensive areas.
