• 6:04 p.m. Wednesday -- A 55-year-old white man was killed in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse at 2201 Randolph Road in Wheaton. Police went to the scene, but efforts to revive the man using CPR failed. The Washington Post has identified the victim as James Martin. A security tape from a camera that monitors the lot was turned over to police.

• 7:41 a.m. Thursday -- A Hispanic man riding a lawn mower was killed on the 11000 block of Rockville Pike at Fitzgerald Auto Mall near White Flint Mall.

• 8:12 a.m. -- A black male cabdriver in his forties was shot while pumping gas at a Mobil station in the Aspen Hill area, near the intersection of Aspen Hill Road and Connecticut Avenue. He died at the scene. Before the incident, he entered the gas station, where he was a regular customer, used the restroom and bought a lottery ticket.

• 8:37 a.m. -- A Hispanic woman in her forties died after being shot in the head while sitting on a bench outside a post office at 3802 International Drive next to the Leisure World retirement community in Silver Spring.

• 9:58 a.m. -- A white woman around the age of 35 was shot dead at a Shell gas station at 10515 Connecticut Avenue in Kensington, at the intersection of Knowles and Connecticut Avenues. She was vacuuming her minivan.


So we have only one white male. Very probable (if there is a motive other than killing) that this could be a messedup white guy thing

Exactly, IMHO, it's not international terrorism, maybe domestic terrorism, but that depends on your definitions...

Anyway you look at it however, the shooter seems to have no good reason for doing what "he's" doing, its either a nut job having flashbacks, some extremely disturbed kids, or just some other disturbed individuals, that decided to make the news in one of the most horrific ways possible.

I will apologize in advance. However, I see no problem with getting on the road and looking for the van, and I would of course be armed with a weapon and a cellphone. And it would fly in the face of logic to fail to scrutinized Arabs.

No it wouldn't. The overwhelming majority of crimes like this aren't perpetrated by Arabs. It would make no sense to single out Arabs in these shootings. You're just projecting your anti-Arab attitudes on a situation that is, as far as anyone knows, completely unrelated to Arabs.

I am reacting to this incident as a possible terrorist incident due to its unusual nature, proximity to Washington, and because the United States government has told it citizens to be on guard.

I don't have any bias against Arabs. It just so happens that Arabs have declared jihad against my country. If Eskimos declare vendetta against my country and kill 3,000 of my fellow citizens I will be on the look out for them too. And if you don't like it you can go blow a goat.

So, do you get your gun and hunt for Arabs everytime someone is killed in Washington? There are 300 murders a year there, actually INSIDE Washington. Why don't you react the same to this?

There is nothing here indicating it is remotely linked to terrorism. This certainly isn't a typical terrorist M.O. However, crazy white guys do this kind of crap all the time--go on bezerk killing sprees. If you want to profile anyone, I suggest go hunting down middle-aged white men. Oopsie, then you'd have to look in the mirror...

As far as important facilities in MoCo, there are a lot. My hometown of Germantown had the Department of Energy, NIST and NIH are nearby, along with a whole mess of biotech firms and stuff. However, their importance is relative, and I doubt it has anything at all to do with that.

My mom called, one of the shootings was a few blocks from the school where she teaches. Apparently cops are pulling over lots of vehicles on the highways, just to check for the people.

It's bad, but you are severly over-reacting jimmy. MoCo has no real important targets to hit, just thousands of petty government drones. And it doesn't even look like they're doing that.

Besides, you're idea that this is a diversion makes no real sense. Why would terrorists do anything to heighten security before they carry out an attack?

This sounds nothing like Son of Sam. It might a form of wilding by young military kids or someone really put out with the Federal government (aka milita group). But in these times the prudent course of action is to treat it as a potential terrorist action by default because of its peculiar nature.

Serial killers do not kill in this manner. They kill in a very personal way. These were medium range shootings, clean and impersonal. Also done in a manner to leave little evidence outside of the possible eyewitnesses. Eyewitness evidence is considered much less reliable than physical evidence. One must be open to the possibility that the perps may be or have been policemen. Or FBI/CIA.

Or foreign intelligence/spooks.

I'm kind of suprised, but I am siding a little with JT on this one.

I read a book by Larry Bond(I believe) called the Enemy Within a couple of years ago.

This could be construed as terrorist activity.

Think on this, what has happened in Montgomery County today?

People confused and living in fear.



Isn't that a terrorist's objective?

It was in the book mentioned earlier.

And it was plausible.

However, I want to make clear that I don't think we should go around rousting out Arab people from their homes because of this.

I don't know, nor would I conjecture at this point, as to who the theoretical terrorists are.

I am just trying to think about the possibilities. Don't get whacked out on my Arab comment.

One thing that occurs is that there have been changes in security arrangements in many places since 9/11. Many people working for security firms were ridiculed as untrained and ineffective. Underpaid and generally portrayed as being just one click above pond scum. Scenario: A couple of pals, maybe one ex-military, are laid off from a security related job. This really messes up their lives and they develop a serious disgrunted employee obsession because they really did their best and felt that they were good employees. They stick together and feed off each other's negativity.

Finally their bitterness grows to irrational proportions and they decide to strike back by going on a killing spree in a community with a large population of government employees.

The FBI is probably running this one down right now.

Taking that one step further perhaps the two disgruntled employees worked for a private firm that provided security to a facility that might have some link to biological research that could have a dual use (one of which could be related to WOMD). Perhaps the private firm was replaced with military or government security putting these men out of work.

They may have even kept their keys and used them to steal a company van for todays killing spree to prove that the new security is not so hot.

Technically, jt's correct, serial killer's tend to kill close up, but there are always exceptions. Take Ted Kazinski for example. The man is a serial killer, but he never laid eyes on the people he killed. If there were about terrorism, there'd be an announcement to the press.

yes I would loosely classify this as domestic terrorism.

But it could be just a guy who wants to kill people for some sort of personal fulfillment, but doesn't want to risk getting caught by doing it at short range.

If its terrorism there will probably be a trail of evidence to make it clear.

Anyway, please lets not get on gun control. If guns were outlawed, only outlaws would have guns.

Also, this may have been done with a hunting rifle which is rarely used in murders and wouldn't be effected by even the most radical gun control proposals.

It's a no-brainer.
Even formerly law abiding citizens that decide to keep their guns become "outlaws"!

The first thing that would happen if guns were outlawed is that everyone that didn't have one would rush to get one and those that had several would rush to get twenty more. Its so deeply ingrained in American culture it would be like prohibition, doomed to failure.
