I'd bring a solar-powered laptop with satellite Internet connection and sit wherever I land endlessly refreshing at the Poly URL and staring glumly at the "server not found" message.

Oh and to avoid backstabbers.....

Before you go, research kings of the time who were dying of them incurable diseases, bring back medicines and cure them, perform a few other miraculous life saving favors for them. Saving peoples lives goes a long way to loyalty .

AD 1402...

I would go to Greenland and check out how the Norse colony there was doing, try and find out why it disappeared 100 years later.

And I would take a trip to Vinland of course. With my modern weapons I would massacre the skraelings and establish a permanent Viking empire there.

Yah, look at how people treated Jesus...

It's human nature to envy. Putting yourself in a position of power will almost always lead to someone wanting what you have, willing to do what it takes to displace you. Some sort of alarm/surveilance system would be a good idea for any megalomaniacs. Just make sure to set up a reliable electrical source before making your move... and even then you'd be vulnerable to sabotage of that electrical source.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Mike got my picks exactly. I'd take loads of antibiotics and steroids, plus as much saffron and nutmeg as I could carry. Then I'd set up shop as an apothecary and make a small fortune.

Did Jesus save the life of the king of France, that of his some of his ailing familly members, then wipe out the British to show how much I like em?

I'm just saying, you'd make enemies no matter how you came to power. I'd think if you showed that much power (wiping out a nationality) even the king of France would be after your head secretly. Too much risk in leaving you alive. So be prepared to kill anyone and everyone... which doesn't seem like a fun existance to me.

I would rather say there are steps to becoming Hitler, and many if given the right environment would behave in the same manner given the opportunity. There are plenty of madman running around just the society stops them fulfilling their potential most of the time. (after it creates them first of course)...

I'm giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I'd agree that given the proper environment, most people could be warped into doing atrocious things.

I'd want ot help a modern civilization. Some one who believes in human rights (at least for their own people; outsiders can go to hell), has a history of R&D, and has the potential to change the world.

1400: The Doge of Venice receives an offer he can't refuse.

1401: The Arsenal (think skunkworks of medieval era; it was the place where the venetians developed new weaposn and occasionally ships. The place turned out warships in HOURS) develops a steam powered machine gun, and takes it against g gian galeazzo.

1402: Venice annexes the duchy of milan, and by 1450 rules over a federation of italy.

1453: Turkish cannons at constantinople face the Venetian army. Hot air ballons let venetian artilleryman use pintpoint accuracy, saving the city for christendom.

Not in 1400 it wasn't. It was a Catholic Duchy with tolerance for the Orothodox Church.

I'd take a list of where each of you was going, then show up and kill you and hide your body before you could do any damage to history. Then I'd fling all of the corpses in Stromboli and pitch myself in aftwards.

BTW, I'm wondering how any of youn could carry a tank in your arms, let alone a battleship.

You could always go with the fixed path view of time:
Whatever you try to do to change history is doomed to fail, as your actions merely help along the events that have already occured.

Hmm, I'd go back to Uni to get my medical degree. Then, in an act of unspeakable blasphemy I'd claim I was Jesus Christ, come to liberate mankind. I'd heal the sick and order the pope about. Form another crusade to liberate the Holy Land, kick turkish butt, then ascend heaven...

fair?

No when he went to "tank with supplies" I upped the ante to something really able to control the world for the time to come.

Maybe that would be the latest US secret instant-inflattable nuclear battleship project where you have all the ingredients for a full battleship with the crew in the special carry pack, that you only add some ORMUS white gold dust , leave it on overnight in the deep water and when you come back you have the whole thing floating.

And than you go around, come to Venice and say listen to me or else

However being a Croat I would probably choose the center of the world to be Dubrovnik, and sink pesky Venetians anyway

Note: Not so. Venice was considered the best city in the world in 1400, by Europeans. Muslims happened to agree.

The claim was true in 1000, but by 1400, Europe was leaps and bounds ahead of the muslim world.

First I'd take a way to come back.

I'd take medicine, science, math and medical texts. I'd give those to somebody from that era that could possibly understand them. Or several such people.

I'd do a little partying with the maidens, steal a bunch of things and press the way back button to the present.

Then I'd see what had changed.
