L.A. sucks culturally. If you think the Hollywood movie industry is culture, then I can see it. Otherwise, it's full of a lot of facades with nothing behind them.

Even Philly has more cultural value than L.A.

I like the fact that Istanbul has more votes than Athens.

Boris: I voted for LA mainly based on its influence than any value I attach to it.

Firaxis would have different opinion about this, in their game history matters too In civ 3 terms I believe that LA would be the one influencing the world the most at this moment (culture growth in one turn ). Only culture from New York is that the "Friends" live there.
I voted London still

The Case for Boston -
Boston was the VERY first place where original American culture originated. American portrait artists originated in new england to cater to successful merchants. A thriving craftsmen class created silvers and furniture that, although not at the level of intricacy as European designs, certainly had merit in its originality. New Amsterdam at this time did have more art than Boston, but this does not count as this art was primarily imported from Europe, and was not of original creation. In addition, literary culture primarily began in New England as well. Thoreau, Emerson, all the greats who believed that American authors had to seperate their style from the Europeans and become originators and innovators. Robert Frost, one of the most respected poets of all time, grew up and lived in New England, and his poetry has that distinctive New England flavor. Emily Dickinson is another great New England writer who actually lived on a college campus in Amherst.
Speaking of colleges - did you know that Boston has the highest proportion of college students to population of a city than anywhere in the world? This helps us keep up with the production of modern culture by being a mecca for artists and intellectuals of all sorts. College bands, college artists, college writers… they all have found their home in Boston!

Istanbul, IMO.

It's got nearly 2000 years of history, tons of religious and national importance, and is the ultimate merge of East and West in our world.

Lots of good choices up there, but that's where my vote goes.

food? slang? custume? dance? err.. is that what defines culture?

culture is based both on past and present!! my vote goes for Rome, but it might be some asian city as well, but i know nothing of those so...

i'm not sure what LA has to do with culture except hollywood.. some **** movies, and every once in a while a very nice movie but that's about it

What meaning of culture is really meant here... Cultural history/heritage, modern-day art (fashion, music, theater etc.), its place in today's Western/world culture (i.e. McDonald's, Coca Cola, Hollywood etc.), or a combination of those?

In any case, I want Mumbai in! How can Bollywood possibly be forgotten.

Lessee...

Key aspects of modern culture:

Art: Tricky, but I have to say NYC.

Popular Music: Dozens of great american cities. Detroit has consistently produced good music throughout the past five decades, I really should vote for that. I really feel like going for Kingston, Jamaica, though...

Modern Dance: I'll be chauvinistic and proclaim the Cullberg Ballet the greatest dance company in the world. So Stockholm.

Architecture: I know everyone will hate me for this, but I have to go with London for this one. I like The Millennium Dome. And The Press Pavillion at Lords.

Theater: Not qualified to opine on this.

Films: Tricky, but I have to say Paris... Hollywood has sharply declined since the 70s, Paris has kept up.

Television: New York. Probably. I don't really know where most stuff is filmed.

In all other aspects Wall Street dominates.

Overall: New York. Would score highly in all these categories, except possibly Architecture (bloody awful WTC siter proposals)
