The Courts of Candle’Bre
A Velocigames production
The Philosophy of Velocigames
In order to understand The Courts of Candle’Bre it is first necessary to understand the philosophy that caused the company of Velocigames to be created. The staff love games, they love playing them, and they want as many people as possible to experience the same thing. We believe that gamers should have the opportunity to not only play a good computer game and enjoy themselves, but also to help shape the way the game develops. They should be able to offer their thoughts and opinions on the ways in which the game could be changed and have the ability to mould it in whatever way they desire.
This philosophy is the reason why we are all here and it is still driving the Development team.
We’re all enjoying the ride and we hope you can join us.
The Courts of Candle’Bre
The Courts of Candle’Bre is a turn-based strategy game set in an original fantasy universe. The Beta version will feature:
Five factions with distinct personalities and unique abilities that are competing for control of the country.
A province-based map system that allows you to expand, improve and defend your territory on your path to glory.
Our Fate Engine that will influence your destiny through the hands of the Gods.
Three separate technology trees that you can use to specialise or diversify your faction in whatever way you wish.
A strategic battle system that utilises combined arms so that you can defeat your enemies.
Currently we have plans to implement advanced Social, Magical and Tactical Battle models into the game. These will be added into the game incrementally during Beta-testing and the specifics of these systems will be subject to alteration depending on the opinions of testers.
The Development Process
An alpha-version of The Courts of Candle’Bre is currently in production. When this is completed the game will go to the Development team for a short testing period. During this testing period any critical bugs will be removed and the first stage of game-play balancing will be started.
The project will then move into Beta-testing. The game will be available to download from our official website completely free of charge (or burnt onto a CD and sent to you, if you agree to pay the postage) and we will welcome anybody who wishes to help shape the future of the game. At this point it will be up to the testers to play the game and tell the Development team about their experiences. What did they like about the game? What did they not like? How do they think the game should be changed? Did they find any bugs?
During Beta-testing as many patches as prove necessary will be released to constantly refine and update the game code according to feedback from the testers.
We are fully committed to listening to the comments of our players and, although we can not please everybody, we are determined to give our fans a great deal of control over the course the game takes during the development process. This isn’t our game, it is your game and it can be anything you want it to be.

Release Information
At the moment we are projecting a Beta release for First Quarter 2003, however we will do everything we can to bring this forward. Further announcements will be made nearer the time.

if your game turns out as good as you hope, this above statement might be really hard to meet. while it's a nice gesture it's really unnecessary imo(given the amount of file mirrors on the net), and probably cause more problems than it's potential benefits. just think if your game really took off and you got asked for hundreds, or more cds? or all the work involved in such? then again maybe that would be good practice...

I just checked out the CB site and have been reading the threads... I like what I see. I started reading everything Vel wrote about CivIII over a year ago and I look forward to his own work. When you're ready for Beta Testers, count me in.

First quarter 2003? Are the eye-candy graphics going to be done? Is it going to be ready to put out in the public's hands? How long after this until you are ready for your commercial release in your estimate?

If there's a delay at all, that, I foresee, will be where the delay stems from. There are a TON of graphics that need doing, and I'm trying to tackle them (generally) in order of importance, while making frequent side-jaunts down other corridors to learn more about the software I'm using--basically, I'm learning it all as I go.
In my head then, the biggies are: User Interface (a simply must-have), map graphics (provincial improvements, terrain tiles, army graphic, etc...another must-have), and province screen layouts (not as crucial as the other two, but one of our biggest possibilities for some really SWEET eye-candy).
I've gotten some mockups done on the main map display, and part of the manage armies window, then put that aside to continue work on provincial improvements and such. We *should* start having some stuff available for "show-and-tell" soon tho....it's getting polished enough that I don't think I'll embarass myself...
As to the timeframe for making the transition from initial release to commercial....that's a big unknown at this point. I envision an extended period of time spent once the game is out there in the public's hands, making tweaks and improvements to the core system before we launch full-scale into the "Reckoning" project (the commercial release has been tentatively entitled "Candle'Bre: Reckoning")

Thanks Vel for your quick reply. I wish I could help you guys but I have no skills and really do not have time to learn any thing of use. So, hopefully I can continue reading and from time to time be a cheerleader for you.

This looks very promising indeed!
I read about the project a couple of years ago and since that I have stopped by the Candle'bre site/forums occassionally to see how things progressed. I'm glad to see how much you guys have achieved so far - quite impressive that you have actually managed to keep the projekt on track without running out of steam.
I really like the rules/main principles of the game, and the screenshots looks excellent - can't wait to try out a public alpha version.
