	Gibraltar - 99% say "NO!" to Spain. Tired of ads?

With so few people living there wanting joint sovereignty why can't Spain just drop the issue?

Only a mere 187 people (out of 20,000) voted for joint sovereignty.

Spain should just realize that the people of Gibraltar want to be British and not Spainish. Of course the People of Hong Kong didn't want to join communist China but that still happened...

It sucks to be Spain right now. It would make sense if Gibraltar would want to join Spain, since there are undoubtly a lot of Spanish people who live there. Does anyone know why no one in Gibraltar wants to join Spain?

The problem is that the people of Gibraltar just want the benefits of being British (as opposed to being Spanish, sad for some to admit), not to mention that there are probably few if any non-British-ied descendants of the original Spanish natives.

History and Time have legalized theft and now nothing can be done but follow the will of the current inhabitants. Same with the Malvinas....

I really doubt Britain will give up Gibralter so long as the people there want to stay British.

I would think Northern Ireland and the Falklands would be proof enough that the Brits care more about the wishes of the people than most other factors.

Hong Kong was a bit different. There was an agreement. It expired. Either the British government decided that agreements are more important, or they wisely chose not to push their luck with a rising super power. They still haggled for as good a deal as they could for the people left behind.
