I dunno... from one hand he is saying they should look into alliances, from the other he seems to say they haven't thought about allying with us against Lux.

But let's face it, we are worthier allies to them than the legos would be, we have stated on more then one occasion we will war if that suits our goals. They do seem to have a special grudge against both the builders and "fairyland", and not so against us or lux. Interesting post, even coming from a not always as serious player

Meshelic: you were right in responding this should not be discussed on a trash talk thread, however I would have said that on our private forum, and let the other teams spill whatever secrets they would like. It is time to come forward as our diplomatic chief, though, but on another thread (and please let other members comment on that before you run off, only based on my opinion )

I apologize DeepO for my haste in such an area, but I believe that had that conversation continued in the way it probably would have without my interruption, it may affect not only public opinion towards US but possibly thwarted any relationship we might establish with the other teams, depending on what kind of relationship we want with them.

Diplomacy is a tight-rope. A couple shakes and it could all fall apart. We want to make sure our rope is strong and not weighed down by unofficial and broad statements that may weaken our potential....

You do have a point when you say I could have waited and listened to any other strategies or secrets they might have unintentionally given away, but I also felt it best not to isolate the Legolanders or the Roleplay team.

Remember, we still do not know at this time how much strength the Legolanders, Roleplay team or any of the other teams for that matter might have when we get started. It's best to keep things COMPLETELY equal for the time being.
Although I do greatly appreciate your comments and your criticism. Keep up the good work.

Hey, no need to apologizing, you're doing fine. But I would have been interested to the first 2 or 3 posts from the other teams, if they would have fallen for it, and then post your response.

And I am not underestimating any teams here.... even if it from time to time might seem that way. I'm just curious in how far people are willing to go to adhere to their principles.

Latest News: The Glory of War have announced their status as "mercenaries" and pledge to offer support to the highest bidder.

Interpreted correctly, we can naturally assume that the Glory of War cannot be trusted. Though we already knew that they were barbaric and surely not-peaceful, we can now add to our conception of them that they will abandon alliances on a whim, break treaties, and sell their services to the highest bidder.

There are two kinds of mercenaries. One kind sells their services but regards it as a matter of honor to remain loyal to their employers even if the other side makes a better offer later. The other is perfectly happy to sell out their original employers the moment a better deal comes along. Do you have a clear indication that GoW intends to be the type of mercenaries who sell out their employers?

Full PM-box? Change here!

Zeit is the Ambassador to GoW. He will have to find that out in his initial talks with them, and the timeline on that is unknown at this moment....you there Zeit?

This is conjecture, but I could probably say that the GoW will not go for the 'honorable' mercenary type. This effects the rest of the teams the same as us, until we find out what the in-game civ positioning turns out to be.
I surmise that they will sell out to the highest bidder, although they have somewhat mentioned otherwise that they will be honorable. It depends on whether we want to take them at face value.

We shall have to watch their conduct in-game, and pay attention to their words.

I also doubt that this will influence the game greatly. It might in the Middle-Ages, but early periods this is doubtful. There isn't that kind of money available in the Ancient Era to support your own army AND afford to pay the Glory of War their mercenary tax. I doubt most teams will take advantage of this situation early.

In SP, I routinely bribe AIs to ally with me using tech. If GoW lags behind technologically, it's not too hard to imagine a team with better research offering three or four techs as payment.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Trading technology as such is dangerous, especially if you aren't sure if you trust them or not.

Perhaps they will mostly research military paths while accepting other research techs as bribes. It's a diabolical thought....

Suffering from ads?

Whoever is hiring them may face quite a bit of public scrutiny. We have so far portrayed ourselves as the good guys anyways. I would rather we crush them.

It is natural to assume (somewhat) that the Glory of War, having only the sole purpose of warfare will be considered a threat to every team all the time. Especially in light of their new status as mercenaries...

As an ambassador for the team, i'll make an effort to uncover some of the intentions behind this "mercenary" declaration.

I am sorry i wasn't here for the last couple of days, some RL issues came up.

I don't think they would switch sides so quickly, after all, a mercenary is a businessman, and he has to uphold his reputation. But i think they are more likely to (betray), since opportunities can come and go. We should try to maintain some degree of economical and military power, or rather make them "realize" that we are not an easy target (=more expensive to wage war on), and that we could be a wealthier customer than our enemies. We can do this diplomaticaly, by spending money and make sure they see that, bullying around, and so forth. The most important thing is to never look weak in their eyes- this way our high price will keep thwarting potential customers.

I would advise against hiring them, in most cases, but as many stated before, its game circumstances that really count.

We are not what? Weak or mercenary? Because I still wouldn't rule it out for us neither, if the situation is right.

But surely we are not allowed to be weak globally, however in certain situations we could be temporarily weak... PR during those times will be difficult.

I meant something else... if they are under contract to say, Lux, and Lux starts LOSING, then a betrayal might be negotiated or purchased (or even happen without third-party involvement).

Hmm... you got a point there, Theseus. The GoW will be very tricky to have as allies, however if the other teams know about how they changed cloaks to the winner too easily, their mercenary role is finished in this game. They can only do it when they want to go for world domination alone, and feel comfortable fighting all remaining teams off at the same time.

Mercnaries have a tendency to stop fighting when they see their contractor is unable to pay (that is- beaten to death by a stronger and wealthier) opponent.

FOREIGN MINISTRY SIDENOTE:

The Glory of War have asked us to hire them already! I wouldn't take this too seriously (it's so early in the game!) but it would be interesting to observe who else they petition. Seems like they will try and exploit their mercenary status as soon as it is profitable and able to work...

no it was in the main chat

and actually, to put things in perspective, it was panzer32 (of the GoW ambassadorship) who asked, but I don't think we should take him seriously. Not to mention that Unorthodox is actually the ambassador to us, and so Panzer32's questioning was not really official...

Indeed, i would not take it seriously, GoW seem to badly want things steered up and attention drawn to them, take their "Starting Position" screenshot as an example...

My report on the GoW so far:

As the GoW ambassador, i must state that UnOothodox is treating me respectfully, and so far has given me one important piece of information regarding their mercenary nature: As they will be a fuedal team, any power holders may accept any contract, meaning they might even fight against two opponents who war with eachother(!), and only if this will seem problematic enough, the high kind (GF) will intervene, which probably means the contract won't be accepted or even broken.

On the payment issue- they will be willing to accept any sort of it- Techs, Cities, gold, workers, and even "artillery"- which means the other team will allow GoW to capture X amount of it.

I still believe we can make use of them, before we march into their cities...

GoW, being mercenaries, are likely to start making contacts with potential clients at this point of the game. My guess would be that Legoland would be their first choice of a customer - a civ that wishes to concentrate on building and would prefer if another civ does the dirty work.

Gow changed their capital's name to Atlantis. It's probably just another attempt to try to persuade us that they started in a one tile island though there may be something more to that.

I was wondering whose city that was.

Unless it was a very very tiny island, would they know at this point?

Of course the fact that their city is size two in the alleged game screenshot and size one in the actual game might undermine their efforts just a tad.
