World's tallest building planned for WTC site Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...redevelopment_1

quote:

NEW YORK (AP) - Plans for redeveloping the World Trade Center site include proposals for memorials on the tops of buildings and below ground, a garden and the tallest building in the world, a published report said.

Although it is not yet known which elements will make it into the final design, the director of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the agency charged with overseeing the redevelopment process, praised the new plans for their creativity, The New York Times reported Friday.

Calling them "astoundingly innovative, creative and exciting," the director, Roland Betts, said he was not worried about raising expectations too high.

"They're really good, and they did things that are so different from one another that it's astounding," Betts said.

Seven architecture teams were assigned to develop plans for the site in September after the original six plans were widely criticized for being unimaginative. The new plans will be presented in their final form next month.

Unnamed officials told the Times each of the seven plans is centered on a memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. One plan uses the top of a tower as a memorial, while another incorporates a 19th-century style garden as part of its remembrance to the victims.

At least one of the plans extends below ground to expose subterranean levels of the trade center site.

Sounds good to me. Having the tallest building in the world built here really gives Bin Laden the finger. I say go for it.

I hate that building, it's a terrible design. Besides, you can't build the worlds tallest building. Only Chicago can.

Just build something that ends up looking like the previous 2 towers, taller if you want...with an obvious memorial.

Then put flaks/sam sites on the upper part of the building and put national guard soliders around the tower. Also there must be a lot of dogs sniffing out bombs all the time.

Just breathing makes us targets.

Anyhow, Fez had a good train of thought regarding defense. Although putting AA guns on civilian buildings is impractical, certain more strict guidelines regarding air traffic should be drafted and enforced. No-Fly zones around Downtown areas and major urban landmarks except for helicopters (News, Ambulance, Police, Government, and Military), flight corridors for approach and departure out to several miles from airport, and so on.

The thing about massive buildings (meaning girth, not just height) is that it is much harder to bring them down because of their size. More fire-suppression, more escape routes, more room to absorb the impact of a jetliner. The two jets of 9-11 were almost as wide as the two towers, I'm still suprised they didn't slice clear throught the buildings like cutting stalks of celery. If the towers had been twice as thick, they might not have collapsed, or at least stood much longer after the impacts.

This idea is great. Inspiring. Wonderful!

As to the memorials, I have previously express my views on this. But I think Osama bin Laden hisself ought to be a live exhibit, strung between two replicas of the WTC, with a platform for the children to spit and urinate.

Oh my GOD how can anyone consider that hack design good looking? I'd love to see the world's new tallest there, but it probably won't happen. New York/ Jersey are already bidding for tallest free-standing structure with a new tower - the risk and architectural overkill of a tallest skyscraper just does not make it realistic

That design is horrific.

Having a larger no-fly zone over Manhattan would be impossible, as there are three major airports in spitting distance (Newark, JFK, LaGuardia).

I would like to see a big building there, but it doesn't have to the world's tallest, IMO. Just something to make the skyline unique again.

Whatever's built should be realistically useable. A mega-tower with loads of empty office space would be pretty sorry tribute.

Here is a question for those of you who have said you don't like the proposed design for the WTC site. How would you make it better? If you dislike the archatecture then what would you change? Keep in mind that your suggestions should be financially & politically viable and should do something practical towards replacing the business space and tax revenues which have been lost.

Damn evil Flash crap. I closed the Window right away. I should be given a choice of viewing Flash crap or just look at some conceptual renderings. Blah.

Okay, enough ranting. I haven't seen it, but skyscrappers are always butt ugly. You can't make skyscrappers look good. Not even the great architects such as I.M. Pei.

I'd say give one of them free reign - they will do much better than coming out with a skyscrapper.

In the article that Drosedar linked the new tower is hailed as a symbolic "turning of the other cheek". I'm wondering what a building that was not a "turning of the other cheek" would look? Was someone thinking of building something that resembled a Minuteman missle silo?
