One major General question about ctp2 Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

I've never played this game ever. So my question is justified (I guess). I have Civ1, Civ3, Smac/Smax and colonization. I've Never played civ2 nor ctp1.

I found CTP2 in my local store at 10 euro (approx 10 $). Is this game worth buying? I like all those games I've played. Will this game look a bit 'outdated' compared to civ3 or smac/smax?

I know, 10 € isn't a lot of money, but if I like this game, my free-time starts with a negative indicator...

So help me if you can.

Thank you.

aaglo, CTP2 has been greatly enhanced and fixed with the mods released by the community. IMO, it is a good investment now.

A lot of interesting concepts, like Public Works (no workers!) and armies (real stacked combat, with melee units, flanking units etc) make this game an interesting approach to a civ game. Also the game has a natural "empire" feel to it.

There are more government choices than in Civ3, a good diplomacy system (not as good as the SMAC one, though) and the game won't feel "outdated" when compared to SMAC. Some people argue that it is even better than Civ3. There is a richer tech tree (some mods expand it even further) and the AI is smart enough to provide a challenge (with the mods, of course).

There are more terraforming options, an interesting trade system and a boatload of statistics about your cities and your empire as a whole. Some special units (slaver, corporate branch) add some spice to the game. And the battles are nicely fought in a separate screen. Well, I like this.

Wow... two independent links to the same thread...

Well, if Velociryx favours this game, maybe I should be running towards the store...

Sounds nice.

Funny, I allways thought that ctp and ctp2 were hated games through-out the civving communities... I guess they are not...

Oh BTW, in that same store, ctp1 costs 16€ (ctp2 10€)... how crooked is that...

yeah, hex beat me to it...

But we CTPers like to point that thread as some sort of "seal of approval".

Hey, maybe they could sell the game with a big "Approved by Velociryx" seal...

When CTP2 was released there was alot of backlash against it from alot of people - Activison released it with a very lame AI.
And then released a rather poor patch and left it for dead. It p*##!d alot of people off and from then on only a few kept with the game to see if they could improve it.
They did and it's now a much more complete game and IMHO and many others, maybe the best game of it's type.
For the money it costs now it's worth getting hold of,and all the Mods add loads of value for free

Okay, I bought the game.

Interesting. It's like a mixture of civ and Master Of Magic.. ... in a strange way, I like this.

And the public works is cool feature

What is the latest version of the game. As a matter of fact, where can I see the version I'm playing. In the ctp2.inf -file there is mentioned version 110.2 (or something similar - I cannot remember)...

The game you bought is probably the vanilla version (v1). Download the patch here. Once the patch is in, don’t forget the mods! Enjoy.

Aaglo, don’t feel ignored. There are basically just two version of the game. If you’ve just installed it, you’re probably running v1. If you’ve installed the patch, it’s v1.11.

If you really, really want to know what version you’re running, open the "anet.inf" file in ..\ ctp2_program\ctp\ using Notepad. Find the "[Version Info]" section header, and the "Version=" key.
