PBEM game 'the european edition' Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Anyone interested in starting another test-run

I just got my copy (43€ --->local shop(FNAC))
So I can't wait for an MP game.
Non-europeans are welcome to join off-course

I suggest using the same set-up as the Demo-game,
Well, who's up for it ?

I guess I could give it a shot, assuming you don't mind an American. For my e-mail address, just add @hiwaay.net after my handle.

Pure humans, or a mixture of human civs and AI civs? Also, what map size did you have in mind? A small map might work well if it's four human civs with no AIs.

I was thinking max. 4 humans to keep it going.

We could mix in a couple of AI, or just keep it strictly humans. Either way is ok with me. Slight preference for no AI though.

We'll see what the other players say

Ha, I want to you too, but I'm only going to the Fnac this weekend... so I hope you guys can wait until Saturday to set this up.

And no AI? damn, that means I'll only have you guys to beat up

(I agree, actually, it would be cool to more or less try another game similar to the demogame)

Suffering from ads?

We can decide that by Saturday, (I personally have not yet even opened the MP setup screen in PTW - maybe I will have done so by then), but lets decide on settings first.

I suggest everything random except civ choice and map size.

Are we playing tiny or small map? Are we choosing from the civs in the Demogame?

[Edit: I guess we could start and have DeepO go last]

alexman, what about taking the demogame civ choices, and try to play as they would (projected on how we see them, of course)? I will take whatever civ remains, and going last would be fine for me. If you guys don't like this idea, I'll try to pick one of the lesser known civs from the demogame, and try it on myself. It's no big deal, I'd like to play in numerous styles...

Would you guys like a fast(er) game?
We could set up a mini demo game...
don't worry, nothing fancy, just 2 players per team,
who could play whenever the save is availlable.
This could be a good way to get turns move more quickly.
Especially over the holydays where one player might be
unavaillable for several days.
And if we mix euro's with americans,
there practically always someone on-line to play ahead
We just post the save in the PBEM forum, afterall we don't really need private forum for this,do we
This is just an idea off-course

I also like DeepO's idea to play the other civs as we think they would play, but then the public PBEM forum wouldn't be a good idea. Maybe our new group e-mail could serve that purpose.

I've at least opened the multiplayer setup to the extent of trying a few hotseat games with me controlling two civs against six AIs. Does that qualify me under the principle of, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king"?

I'd really prefer a small map over a tiny one in order to provide some time to build before the only way we can expand is to eat each other. That would also probably capture more of the flavor of a standard-map 8-player game.

In regard to the idea of trying to play like we think the real PtW Demo Game opponents would, I'm skeptical about hamstringing myself with someone else's strategy. Although I might do a passable Lux Invicta - build early and then consider what I need to do with my Sipahi when the time comes.

You could also play Egypt, unless you think we are hamstringing ourselves with our strategy...

I don't like the idea. Trying to coordinate strategy between two players playing the same civ would be a bit of hassle, and while it might avoid delays while someone's on vacation (assuming both players on a team aren't on vacation at the same time), the coordination could actually slow down the game the rest of the time.

True, assuming there wouldn't be a conflict with someone else who wants Egypt. But if someone else feels the same way, there wouldn't be enough Egypts to go around.

It was just a tought

So, you will be setting it up Nbarclay ?

you can give me any civ you want, no preferences,
just don't expect me to go roll-playing all by myself .
People think I'm weird enough as it is.

Maybe DeepO should impersonate GoW anyway,
he too, came up with the mercenary idea.

Come to think of it, put me down for Lego (Greeks?)

If that's the consensus.

Legos are Carthage.

What civs does everyone else want? I'll take either Egypt or the Ottomans, whichever no one else claims (which could get tricky if other people want both of them).

I don't know what those German guys are up to, but I'd love to play the Arabs as best I can.

However, if anyone else knows about their plans, I'll certainly try to follow them.

Are we using the Demogame settings, except for map size, or are we doing it random?

The Demo game settings (as posted by GhengisFarb when we were getting ready to set up) were:

Map Stats:
World Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Monarch
Landmass (Random)
Climate (Normal)
Temperature (Temperate)
Age (Random)
Barbarians: (Random)
Civ-Specific Abilities
Preserve Random Seed
Culture Flips

That provides enough random factors that unless they can be resolved, we may get something very different, but I'm still inclined to mirror the Demo game other than world size. By the way, he didn't say anything one way or the other about culturally linked starting locations.

It looks like we have our four players. To recap, the civs are shaping up as:

Alexman - Arabs
Alva - Carthage?
DeepO - Not yet decided
Nbarclay - Egypt or, if DeepO wants that, Ottomans

Personally, I'd rather follow the in-game rules, with the additional provision that it's okay to negotiate deals in advance as long as the deal itself adheres to the regular rules. (For example, two players might negotiate over how much gold per turn Monotheism is worth, but no deals along the lines of, "I'll give you Engineering and then Invention for so-and-so" because that violates the prerequisite structure. Similarly, no exchange of location information before Map Making.)

Oh, and I have no objections to things like more complex treaty arrangements than the game supports (e.g. a MPP that applies only if a civ is attacked, not if it is the aggressor).

If it's been discussed the way it really ought to be, I haven't heard about it. Right now, our team seems to be operating from more or less an "anything goes" perspective, as evidenced by the discussion of the possibility of exchanging minimaps.
