gangerwolf, nice.. I got 98 days (I still have my notepad, which I used as a diary) in the woods.. I didn't mind though, it was the best part.

gangerolf, you were in Inner Northern Norway - ice hell? That's were most Norwegians spend their mandatory year. I was there a few weeks for a repetition exercise. Foreign military personnel wouldn't last long up there

yeah we were out and about most of the time anyway (or in the garage - boring maintanence work), but spending the night in a smelly old tent is quite different from a nice comfy bed. I agree it was the best part though

It almost killed me when the guys started smoking in the small tent with 7? ppl. My lungs were tearing apart. And we had just agreed not to smoke.

The enemy came and overtook us in the night in our beds. I was watching the lamp ("oven") and the lieutenant (I was in the admin. tent) accused me of sleeping on guard duty. I denied. Anyways the guy manning the M12 were was he?

I got the highest possible score on the intelligence test when applying (which is VERY rare). Then i went on and had a chat with the psychologist. After a 15 minute chat i got the worst grade possible by the psychologist and was sent home.

That's quite weird. Over here you'd have to be almost an invalid for them to disqualify you... Reasons like allergies would never be a problem (weren't for me... and a friend of mine has even more severe than I do, they didn't even consider letting him go...) when I went through the medical tests before the draft, they basically just checked if I could walk, talk and breathe... almost reminded me of the end of the movie "Requiem For A Dream" - ("Can you see me? Can you hear me? You're fine.")

These kind of reasons lead to the fact that a surprisingly large amount (can't remember precisely, but I'd estimate it 10-25%) of draftees quit their military service - they're either released for medical reasons, or choose to switch to non-military service.

Anodyne, closer to 10%, but still it's kind of much. And yeah, the doctors are not checking you when you enter, so most people have to quit because they're not fit for service (allergies etc.). And some people figure out it's not for them so they switch to non-military service..
would it be so difficult to even give a short look at these guys? But then again doctors are not the same as army doctors.. 'can you walk, eat, shoot? Nothing wrong with you'. One guy passed out in cooper running test, because he had something wrong with his lunges. He told this to the doctors but they said it won't be a problem. Well it was a problem from the first day forward . He got out pretty quick after that though.. they should sue these bastards. Playing with peoples health, and they're not even volunteers.
