Yup, only for six months becuse I am what you call a Greek in Diaspora (basically an immigrant that has been living outside Greece for all his life). Of course six months is not a lot but it was enough to tell me that from that army and its training I am not going to learn much!

So long...

I never did, I just "acquired" an extra shirt after they made me pay for a pair of ancient, busted up gloves that fell from my pocket when I was hauling ammo boxes from a bunker on some tiny island.

tho im 1/2 korean, i was born in seoul, even tho i moved right away to US when i was an infant. So, when the draft notice came, we had to avoid the draft with valid reason (resident of anothe country) This shouldnt have come up if my dad wasnt lazy enough to do paper work to change my citizenship, but nevertheless we forgot about it and I would have been charged with military crime so I went for three months of boot camp during summer while they cleared the papers. My korean family has some deep military background in the marines so thats where i naturally got asigned to. I got off easy tho since they knew id leave and I was son of etc. It was an interesting experience nevertheless.

I've joined the United States Navy for a 6-year hitch. Free Healthcare, housing allowance (when living off base), get to see the world, free education (including tuition for university classes).

Also, it's the Navywide sport to gripe and moan about superiors. Very little brainwashing occurs.

Plus, you make good friends, or, "shipmates" as we would call them in the Navy for life.

The (American) Armed Services also provides a way to improve the adult life of people who come from the lower socio-economic bracket. I have friends I wouldn't have hung out with back home. Or at Texas A&M.

Yes, that's true, but it's still not a real salary, right? It's only the daily "allovance" you get for being nice and being there. Your not awarded for any skills you get, IMO. Compare that to what you basically earn as the salary in the e.g. British army, it's still little as your not paid for being a professional soldier. Reason: if you get there for mandatory service, you don't get paid for it as your real profession. To in a paid army it would be trippled or even more (e.g. 3 x 3 €). And as this little capitalist plan goes on, the army could offer paid services to foreign friendly countries (sidenote: being in the NATO wouldn't make this possible, as they woudn't allow us to charge nice little sums ). This would mean less tax money would have to be spent on the military and we would get an army for highly motivated soldiers that also get paid (not paid some daily "allovance"), plus as you have been waiting for Pekka; some little action every and now and then.

Rasbelin, Yep, I agree. 3 euros per day is not exactly motivating. Considering that for example I spent a year in there, I acutally LOST my savings I had work very hard for. 3 euros per day, that won't even cover for smokers cigarettes.. and if you want to have a coffee in the evening.. well you just have to pay for it and you're on your way of losing life savings . Year is a long time to cover your bills etc. It isn't fun to leave the army broke.
People always say you get free food etc. But you don't just 'get it for free', you EARN it and every damn food you eat is well earned. It's just our shitty economy, I hate it, and it's so cold again outside that I think we should invade Florida right about now.

Well I was in one week 'preparations for boot camp', which I'm thankful for.

It's like a 5 day boot camp, with 1/3 of the physical pressure and 1/2 of the psychological one.

Thus, I now won't get into a draftee shock when I go to the real thing.

I will either go to learn some science (probably computer science) and then get drafted as an officer for 6 years to work in my profession, with a B.Sc

Or... I will go to regular army. Right now I'm being tested for all sorts of options for Intelligence corps.
