Did the Germans use trucks in the desert as troops transports? I think they only used sdfkz's

Nah. Everybody used trucks. 1/2 tracks were mainly used as assault vehicles and heavy equipment haulers. Too expensive, too much fuel/maintainence for use as the standard transport.

I'm pretty sure that they would have used trucks - I doubt they had anywhere near enough sdkz's, and even German 'Armoured' formations generally had as many 'motorised' [truck-borne] troops as they had halftrack mounted troops.

Trucks did quite well in the North African desert, which shouldn't be suprising as rocky terrain is much more common then sandy terrain. While control of the main road was important for logistical reasons [as it was the only sealed road in the theatre and linked all the ports], trucks did OK during tactical movements, and often outpaced tracked vehicles - the British 7th Armoured Division's Support Group's charge to Beda Fomm being the most famous example of this. If you want another example, the British SAS and LRDG units traveled almost exclusively in modified versions of standard-issue trucks, and when issued with M-3 'Honey' light tanks, they generally left these back at base due to the tanks slowing them down!

From memory, one of the key reasons that the Australians besiged in Tobruk caused Rommel so much grief was that the main coast road lay within artillery range. As the German Army was dependant on trucks for both its logistics and tactical movement, the ability of the allies to dominate this road meant that Rommel's wheeled transport had to take a rather long route around Tobruk. If he'd had heaps of halftracks this would have been less of a problem.

Yeah, the Afrika Korps used a lot of trucks to transport equipment and troops. The Opel Blitz was their workhorse for the task. But let me correct you, Eivind. The Opel Blitz has 4 wheels, not 6

You are also correct, Pablo. I've been using the wrong model *embarrased* I was very tired yesterday

Just to close the discussion, I'll post a picture from a German desert Opel Blitz. I'll give it a shot later on.

And every Danny-experts has to come out of the closet and start producing quality Afrika Korps units! ASAP!

Kobra:

Great news that you and the gang are doing an Afrikan Campaign. I have been wanting someone to do one for quite some time now.

Since I am a big fan of desert warfare/Afrika korps, I went ahead and privately re-did J. Petroski's scenario "Afrika korps", with updated graphics, events, gameplay, new sounds, etc.

I even emailed him asking him if I could release this updated scenario. But I have never heard back from him. So I have been enjoying playing this scenario as the Afrika Korps and have been having a blast - I finally have a good, playable Afrika Korps scenario.

I also did a Battle of Britain scenario (playable only as the British) and the German AI whupped my butt. . .

Best of luck.

Cheers!

Very nice looking trucks.

One suggestion though: be careful with using bright colours. I didn't use any current desert units for my re-make of Petroski's Afrika Korps, because the "yellows" were too bright. All units will be fighting against a desert background, so I think the units might look better if they have a dull sand/tan colour.

Just my thoughts.

Best of luck.

Cheers!

Leonidas, while I'm pleased that you're using 'my' Australian infantryman unit, there are a couple of big problems with it in regards to using it in a North Africa scenario

1) Australian troops weren't so suicidal as to wear green uniforms in the desert! They wore standard Commonwealth pattern khaki battledress (the green uniform was introduced in late 1942 when the Army discovered, to it's aparent suprise, that dressing soldiers in Khaki when they were fighting in the jungle was a really dumb idea).

2) The soldier is armed with an Owen Gun. Owen guns weren't issued untill 1943, well after the last Australians had left North Africa.

Yeah, I know

I was hoping that someone would do an Afrika Korps scenario. I have NO experience doing scenarios for Civ2. But I rolled up my sleeves and dug into Petroski's scenario.

None of his sound files match the units - what a job that was. . .

I'm still tweaking the scenarios, Curt. I would rather wait a bit. I am sure they pale in comparison to anything you guys have done.

Cheers!

Thanks for the info Case. I wasn't too picky with the uniforms at this stage. I was trying to get the proper up-dated troops and units in place so I could tweak the scenario.

Now that I am aware of this, I'll see what I can do to change it.

BTW, are there any North African Australian unit graphics lying around?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated

In particular though, I am looking for a full set of desert camo German units. The ones that have been done already are too light (yellowish) in the game.

I think the units should be more dull, sand/tan.

The brownish British and Italian tank units in the units file above actually work quite nicely.

Sort of - with a few very minor differences, Australian soldiers wore exactly the same uniforms as British soldiers and used the same weapons. Slouch hats were never worn near the front line owing the the risk posed by artillery - British pattern tin helmets were worn instead.
