Relegated to firing flares in high-tempo modern mechinized warfare, the venerable 82mm Podnos tray mortar was a star performer in the Soveit-Afghan war.

The second one is a BTR-60PB armored personel carrier.

The F104 Starfighter, also known as the"flying coffin" a numerous, fast and deadly plane (mostly due to its own bad flight characteristic). Built in USA (models A & C) Germany (model G,1266 of them) Italy (model S) Japan (model J) and Canada (model C), it was the mainstay aircaft of most NATO airforces from the early 60's onwards. It was also widely exported around the world.
Think of it as the western equivalent to the Mig 21.

...Aparently it's loss rate wasn't too bad for most users. The F-104 got it's bad reputation mainly due to the West German Air Force's insanely high loss rate. (50% of all the aircraft ended up being destroyed in crashes!). The aircraft was hated by groundcrews though on account of the razor sharp leading edges on the aircraft's wings.

...but not as good aparently. From what I've read, the Indian Air Force's MiG-21s absolutely thumped the better trained Pakistani pilots flying Starfighters.

BTW, those are very nice units!

Thanks, Case.
Apparently this insane loss rate followed this "flying missle" everywhere...
Probably that's why the USAF settled with the F105/F106 combo at the same time, before adopting the USN F4. The F104 was doomed by the fact that it was a high performance plane, used as a fighter/bomber (its Nato role included tactical nuclear strike).

Anyawy, here are two Swedish beauties from the 1970s: The SAAB Viggen variants JA 37 (fighter) and AJ 37 (attack plane). A Draken is in the assembly line.
Unlike the Grippen, these were probably the best fighters of their era.

There's one in the first page of this thread, colour-reduced from ToT. It has to be painted sand/brown/sea blue but the reduction somehow corrupted the image. I'll try and paint it in the ToT palette first. BeBro's Apache and cobra are also breathtaking...

The Draken, way ahead of its time. For instance, the RAF lightning needed two of the exact same engines to fly the same mission, with shorter range, endurance, useless missles etc. It was Sweden's only comercial success in the field, as it was exported to Denmark, Finland and Austria.

Drool.

Civ2 and other games released around its time are the best type for modding- advanced enough to accomodate beautiful graphics, simple enough to not require sophisticated hardware or a staff of 20. Often the mods look better than the original.

It turns out that a) you're completly correct - the F-104 was a deathtrap in most airforces which used it and b) it was the Canadians who suffered the 50% loss rate. Germany 'only' lost about 30% of its' F-104s. Aparently Spain hardly lost any and Italian loss ratios were considered perfectly normal. Odd.

Well, the flag on the vehicle could stand to be more squared-off, and you might move the decal on the shield a little upwards and to the right, but otherwise that looks great!
