	What does your flag mean/stand for? Support Apolyton

In a disgusting/nationalistic/vomit-inducing question, what does your flag mean?


The Greek one is really simple.

The white cross symbolizes the church/religion of da nation.

The colors, white and light blue, symbolize the sky and the sea, which are, as attested for, beautiful in this part of the world


and the lines, for each line there is a letter, and they make up the slogan during the revolution:

freedom or death. (Eleftheria i Thanatos)

Actualy, the keys means the keys to the gates of heaven. I used to remember the rest.

I do know the Irish flag (which was my first choice but opted out), that you shouldn't mix the orange with the green.

I'm upset that the UN won't reconize my country of Carrium, which controls all of Antartica. The fact that they don't show it on their flag is an insult.

No, it doesn't. According to the legend, the Danes were losing a battle against the Estonians, when suddenly that flag fell from the sky, and a voice proclaimed that the Danes would win the battle. They did, and the flag has been the Danish national flag since then.

The legend is known to be untrue, in that the flag didn't originate from that battle, but no one really knows why it came to look like it did, or if it means anything.

It is a curious fact, by the way, that the name of Tallin, capital of Estonia, means "the Danish town", or something along those lines, and that the town's symbol is red with a white cross.

First Confederate flag (bonnie blue flag) is actually flag of Republic of Texas, which I believe means one state (the single star).

The new confederate flag ment all the states in the Confederation (13 stars).

I think it has to do with the early 13 prophets who were later joined by 50 other prophets who wrote the gospel that we call the constitution. But I could be wrong- I was in a public school.

Sweden (gold scandinavian cross on blue background): The design idea is basically nicked wholesale off the danes, a couple of centuries after that flag was originally used (it's the oldest still-used flag in the world AFAIK). The colours were taken from the older Small Royal Coat of Arms, which basically consists of a set of three golden crowns against a blue background. The colour blue is probably derived from the Folkunga Lion, the symbol of an older mediaeval dynasty, with the three crowns having various silly explanations but of course all being in their natural colour.

Hungary: French-Rev-derived Tricolour first used in the 19th century. Possibly the three symbolise strenght, faithfulness and hope, but hey, that's just nonsense really, probably added by some romaniticst bastard decades later. There's also a centred small coat-of-arms (from which the colours are derived) that's not official, but allowed optionally by law. It consists of eight alternating red-and-while bars on the left side of a shield possibly derived from a 12th-C spanish coat-of-arms, and a white antipopean Lorraine cross set in a crown resting on three green hills against a red background on the right-hand side. This supposedly reffers to three mountain ranges, but according to the Slovaks (who use a similar symbol in their coat of arms) it's older, and slovakian. The Coat of Arms is topped with a demi-accurate reproduction of the Crown of St. Stephen, complete with a left leaning bent cross from when someone dropped it on the floor 300 years ago.

Bhutan was under Chinese control in 19th century, theres the dragon.

The yellow (upper) part originally represented monarchy, and orange (lower) part
religion (buddha). They've changed colors in some part of 20th century.

Old IIRC, so don't hold me for this.

Hmmm... I've always thought that US had 52 states, but old 50 star -flag?

Shape and concept are ripped from Scandinavian countries, to avoid Russian... erm... You know.
(I'm not sure had the old Russian tsarist (sp) flag anything to do with it, however)
