The big problem with him adopting cats to take home and disect is this:

He had to kill them to dissect them. Couldn't he simply have "adopted" a cat that had already been put to sleep?

The dissecting doesn't disturb me, but the idea of him killing or even dissecting a live cat is very disturbing, many killers start this way.

Yeah, but he assumes that testing on animals is abuse. What else could he mean? I mean how has he abused animals? Killing a cat and dissecting it? In that case throw all animal researchers in jail because they do the same thing (they don't wait until the cat dies before researching on it).

I guess it's just personal opinion; cutting up cats as a hobby (fits the description) seems pretty abusive to me.

Doesn't seem like a 'hobby' to me. He was doing it for research purposes. Unless all research is simply a 'hobby'.

Obtaining research specimens through lying, killing and then cutting them up doesn't sound like the most brilliant of research to me. It sounds about as scientific as grave-robbing.

Kali worshippers = evil

Kitties = not evil

And besides, he just defeated them, he didn't wipe the thugs out. And Frist probably did hate the cats. There is no room for hatred in research (except for the work itself).

I wasn't saying that I don't accept Byrd's apology. I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of accepting a Democrat's apology, but not a Republican' one.

Byrd is the sort of anachronism (like Helms) who should be long gone from the Senate and US politics. He's tolerated for one reason: since he brings home the pork and prevents WV from sinking to the economic level of, say, Haiti, he'll be reelected as long as he runs. That being the case, he has enough connections to grease things for other Senators, or stop them dead in their tracks.

Speaking as one of the most liberal American posters on 'Poly, and as someone concerned for the well-being of all animals (including cats, a species that I don't particularly like)...

Honestly, without more information, this is a complete nonissue. If he performed vivisections for shits and giggles, that's another thing entirely, but I see no proof of that whatsoever.

This man has personally saved thousands of lives. Now, I don't particularly care for his politics (which, granted, may endanger more lives than he has ever saved). But I'm going to give him a pass on his anatomy experiments until something more incriminating comes along.

Good lord, no wonder everyone hates liberals...

Imran and Shi. I agree. The cat issue is a non-starter. There is much to be learned from the dissection of cats. (I suggest we start with Tuberski )

However, Frist's failure to vote until he was 36 and the conflict of interest arising from his $25 million investment in HCA gives me pause.

If he were a member of the White House, its conflict-of-interest rules would force Frist to divest. If he were a member of the House, its conflict-of-interest rules would permit him to keep the investment, but he wouldn't be able to vote on any health-care issues. But under Senate rules, Frist can keep the investment and vote on health-care issues...as long as his vote is "for the good of the country."

Having been both teacher and student in medical schools I know how common this is. If you love your kitty and you live in a city with a medical school then do not ever, ever let miss kitty out of your sight in public.

You've been warned now. What happens from this day forward is your responsibility.

If that's true then perhaps it explains the instinctive, visceral revulsion that I always feel on the rare occasions when I find myself in the presence of surgeons. Heaven help me if I ever need any kind of serious medical treatment.

Regarding Frist, here's what I want to know: how did he kill these cats? If they had remained unadopted at the animal shelter, they would have been euthanized humanely with barbituates. So is that how Frist killed them? Or did he drown them in the bathtub or strangle them or what?

Or did he vivisect them? In other words, dissect them alive? If that's what he did then I hope he gets his a$$ fried by every animal welfare organization in the country.

AnnC, the Humane Society and shelters like them, unlike the ASPCA, don't euthanize the animals. They will care for them until they die of natural causes. In order to adopt a pet from them, you must sign an agreement to care for the animal.

Unfortunately the article doesn't state which shelters Frist frequented.

Voting until 36 isn't that bad... when you consider the number of people who actually vote anyway.

The $25 million in HCA doesn't bother me too much either. I mean, it's his father's company and he has investments in it. Do you mean to tell me that anyone that owns stock in HMOs can't vote on health bills?

Under IRS rules, he's a corporate insider (immediate relative) and may be one under SEC rules by several different criteria. In most business transactions, there would be a clear disclosure requirements, and if he was a judge or in the executive branch, he would be unable to act on matters which could affect HCA directly or indirectly (i.e. affecting competitors, market conditions, or significantly affecting the industry in general).

It doesn't mean he's "dirty", it does mean there's a very clear conflict of interest.
