Oh, you got me. But the BCS also ranks OSU, Miami, and Georgia over USC. Do the logic; your constant "USC is the best" bullshit is just one gigantic BAM.

even if you wish to cling to your argument that the BCS isn't for deciding the 'true' national champion - as you before admitted

It isn't for the deciding the "best" team. The BCS picks the team with the best season, which was Ohio State this year. It worked out great.

So sports opinions based on some background facts are all bald assertions? If I state that Texas is better than Iowa or even Oklahoma is better than Kansas State would that be a bald assertion since both teams did not play against each other?

Just about every expert has said that USC is the hottest team in the country right now, and they haven't dissapointed. With the #1 SOS they only lost 2 games and the last 7 games have blown their opposition out, including the #12 and #3 teams. That's pretty good evidence for my assertion.

You keep saying it, but even you have to know this isn't what the BCS is for. Every BCS official says it is for deciding the true national champion.

The team with the best season is the true national champion!

College football rewards the team who played best over the whole season, not the team who is the hottest at the end like the NFL does. Why can't you comprehend this extremely simple fact? If you can't even understand what sets college football apart from the pros, how are you supposed to intelligently argue about the effects a playoff will have on college football? Good god!

A TRUE champion is not the team with the best regular season!! The New England Patriots in the NFL did not have the best regular season! They were the best team when it counted!

WHY can't you comprehend the simple fact that the NCAA needs an NFL style playoff even more than the NFL does?! When you have 117 teams, how can you judge one team's season against another?! How are you supposed to intelligently argue about a playoff, when you have no idea what it is FOR? Good God!

--

By the way if college football rewards the team that played the best over the whole season, I STILL have no idea what the Bowl games are for. I asked this before and got no good answer. Bowl games are mini-playoffs. They are NOT regular season games, and THEY decide the national champion. So your assertion that the team with the best regular season is the national champion under the system is an absolute lie.

This is exactly what I've been railing against all this time; the idea that the regular season doesn't count, that the postseason is the "real" season. I hate this kind of attitude and that's one of the reasons I prefer college football over the NFL and other pro sports. Regular season games in college football are always important, always crucial. Teams can't play mediocre for half the season and then win the title by getting hot at the end of the year. You have to consistently perform in college football.

If you don't like this, fine. You're entitled to your opinion. Watch football on Sundays. However, I'll be damned if I'll sit back and watch you and your idiotic bretheren ruin college football for those of us who actually love it. We don't need a college facsimile of the NFL. We love college football the way it is...

quote:

Bullshit. It's the truth. You're too stupid to see it, but it's still the truth. Go watch the Falcons play this week. Leave college football to those of us who actually give a **** about the sport.

But it's exactly what you BCS Apologists back.

*gets soapbox*

I have no problem with traditionalists who like the game the way it used to be and I have no problem with playoff backers (being one), but I DO have a problem with hypocrites that back the BCS. They say the 'regular season means something' in college football and then they throw it away on a one game playoff. The regular season matters except for the one game playoff to determine the national champion at the end .

quote:
It's the truth.

OH REALLY?! Every poll (computer and voters) said Miami had the BETTER regular season. Yet, you say that because of a one game playoff another team had a better season instead. If OSU had a better regular season they should have been ranked #1 before this game. But they weren't.

You get it?!

THE TEAM WITH THE WORSE REGULAR SEASON WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

How can you deal with such hypocrisy I cannot fathom.

quote:
However, I'll be damned if I'll sit back and watch you and your idiotic bretheren ruin college football for those of us who actually love it.

You mean your ever shrinking minority? The momentum for a playoff just grows and grows. Next year we'll have another controversy, probably with more than one team with 1 loss and only 1 gets in to the championship game. There is a committee to talk about the BCS and whether it should overhaul into a playoff (well more than a one game playoff).

Btw, I've seen you've resorted to name calling. The true mark of one who has lost the argument.

quote:
Leave college football to those of us who actually give a **** about the sport.

That doesn't seem to be you. Otherwise when you say you care about the regular season you'd actually mean it, instead of backing a one game playoff for all the marbles.

A title game does not effect the regular season in the slightest. The worst that can happen is that you have a one-loss team playing an undefeated team in the title game. Not a perfect situation, but it is a necessary evil of maintaining the bowl system. You can't expect the sole undefeated team to not play in a bowl, so you have to give them an opponent.

quote:
THE TEAM WITH THE WORSE REGULAR SEASON WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

They were both undefeated. They had the same quality regular season. They both did everything that was expected of them.

It's easy to deal with hypocrisy that doesn't exist, sweetie. Uh oh, I just called Imran a name. I must be losing the argument...

They are a lot of stupid people in this world, I agree.

At least the Big East commissioner still has a brain...

quote:
They ask if the regular season is healthy and the answer is a resounding 'Yes.' They ask if a playoff would affect that and the answer is 'Yes.' Just look at basketball.

quote:
That doesn't seem to be you. Otherwise when you say you care about the regular season you'd actually mean it, instead of backing a one game playoff for all the marbles.

Ahh, here comes the inevitable placement of words in my mouth. God forbid that I want to see the two unbeatens, who will be playing in bowls no matter what, play each other instead of teams with lesser regular seasons. I obviously don't care about the regular season because I want two teams with equal regular seasons to have a chance to play each other in a bowl.

Go talk in the pro football thread, Immie. You're just embarassing yourself here.

The only one embarrasing himself is you. You go around parroting 'sanctity of the regular season', but when it comes down to it you back a one game playoff to determine the national championship. A title game doesn't effect the regular season indeed . By that logic, I can say that a playoff does not effect the regular season seeing as there are 110+ teams in 1-A.

I do wonder how you can be saying this with a straight face as you've been caught with your pants down. It is utterly amazing. To see you squirm and attempt to justify and get no where at all.

Everyone can see you talk about giving the NC to the team with the best regular season, but in the end give it to the team that wins the one game playoff.

Obviously they did not have the same quality regular season. That's foolishness. If that were the case, OSU would have had many more first place votes. The voters believed Miami had the better regular season.

And last year... if Nebraska had won, a team with a worse record in the regular season as its playoff opponent would have been the national champion. And still the BCSites would be going on about the sanctity of the regular season. You don't see a problem with that?

--

Btw, Division 1-AA, II, and III ALL have playoffs. They are college football as well. So before you start yapping your mouth again, remember that a majority of college football teams play in a league with a playoff.

Again--no, it was not pass interference. However, it WAS defensive holding; the defender was impeding the receiver more than five yards beyond the line of scrimmage, before the ball was thrown .

Wrong call? Yes. Bad call? No.

Let Miami whine about the "bad call"... while they ignore many of the other "bad calls" that occured throughout the game. Good teams win... and they had their chance to score at the end, and failed! They LOST!

Congrats to OSU!

And I hope Miami is enjoying the victory party today that was scheduled BEFORE the game

The end of the game reminded me of the Washington-WSU game this year. It went into overtime and Washington was robbed of the game-winning touchdown by a bad call. The next play, they get the game-winning touchdown because of another bad call.

Where did we ever get this goofy overtime system from anyway? What's wrong with playing quarters, or at least 5 or 7 minutes? And of course God forbid that any game in America in any sport ever ends in a tie.

I feel so vindicated even if PSU was one of the losers.

OTOH, the actual Fiesta Bowl was one of the most entertaining and amazing games. How anyone can not like the OT system amazes me.

I actually thought the better team was Miami but they made too many mistakes and ended up losing the game as much as OSU won it.

Congrats to OSU on what was an amazing Cinderella season!!!!

Best wishes to McGeehee hopefully his injury is not career ending. As a person who suffered the same kind of injury on the field, I couldn't stand to watch the replay. Hopefully he rehabs well and will have another stellar season next year.

Your opinion . As long as there is no playoff, I won't be convinced there can be a best team... just a team that was able to go through the regular season and win their one game playoff .

But OSU is a deserving champion in this flawed format .

Oh, as for McGahee... I don't think he'll be the same running back again. It's sad, he had the speed of Vick, but I don't think he'll have it anymore .

College OT rules! I wish the NFL would switch to it, except maybe start them on the 35 yard line instead of the 25 yard line.

OSU had to beat another team in OT this year, Illinois. I wonder, does that make Illinois just as good as Miami?

Aha, I found it.

How you nits can say that Ohio St. was the best team in the country is beyond me.

As Drake was saying, the "playoffs" were the regular season, and the BCS just seeds the teams. A playoff would be nice, but it's not feasible it seems.

This year they got it right (For better of for worse) only because they got lucky. Ohio St. had the best winning percentage (albeit against lousy competition) so they got to play against an overrated Miami team who played against competition that was just as pathetic and weak.

In case you hadn't noticed Big Ten Fans, this is your first national title in MANY years (Michigan's doesn't count, because they stole half of it from Nebraska in 1997).

When your chests burst in pride at your conference's victory this week, realize that next year it will be all the same again, six 7-4 teams, four 4-7 teams, and one team that goes 10-1 and get's the HELL kicked out of them by a superior conference's team.

I just don't get why you folks in the Mid East can't play football...

Of course, drag out the bowl records. Who did they beat?

Ohio St.: A vastly overrated Miami team who didn't beat ANYBODY this year. BTW, Ohio St wouldn't have won if it wouldn't have been for the Big XII conference officiating.

Wisonsin: A Colorado team that NEVER EVER wins their bowl games.

Minnesota: An Arkansas team that doesn't play defense.

Purdue: A decent Washington team with a bad case of the "Giving the ball away"s.

Michigan: Beat a Florida team that didn't belong in a bowl game in the first place. Of course they BARELY won, but that's not the point.
