I'm going to guess he had a legal visa to be in the US at some point, probably a student visa, then overstayed it and getting married either before or after it expired.

It's a sad Catch-22 that tandee's in, but she ought to realize that most people don't share her libertarian values, and so she's gonna get a lot of the comments she's getting. I believe in open immigration, but the citizens of the US also have a right to know who's moving in.

I would contact an immigration lawyer. Find the money, cuz this government is in no mood to play around anymore. Most likely, because he's married to a US citizen and because he's applied for a green card, he won't be in too much trouble. But if he tries to dodge, they're gonna screw him hard.

I hope things work out for you.

If you are not a citizen you don't have the right to vote. There for your opinions carry significantly less value with pandering politicans. The government of every state in the world is designed first and for most for it's own citizens' interests and then everyone else comes in second. It is a fact and I would not change it.

I agree, but this has to be coupled with a more orderly way of dealing with large inflows of immigrants--this is a tough row to hoe. The political reality pre-9/11 forced a speak no evil-see no evil approach, which can longer be maintained. In short, we were lazy.

I'd be against any form of an amnesty program on the grounds that it would be rewarding people for beheiving illegally. If we determine that current immigration quotas are insufficient to meant employment demands then, fine, let's increase the amount of legal immigraints who are allowed in. But our actions must be designed in a way that reinforces respect for the law. That means we need deport persons who have flaunted the law and crossed the borders illegally. Either our laws mean some or they do not there for we need to enforce them.

Take USA citizens, move them to Somalia.

The point, since it seems lost on you, is that a dictatorship often times sneaks up on you. Hitler wasn't a dicator the moment he became Chancelor, nor even after the Nazis burned the Reichstag. It slowly accumulated power until it was able to move openly. Whether the US is experiencing a similar acumulation of power or going through one of its periodic ultra-paranoid repressive episodes remains to be seen. But that doesn't mean you ignore the possibility until after it its happened. I'd much rather fight what probably isn't happening than wake up one day to see Bush announce a suspension of the Consitution. By then, it's too late to stop it.

True, I never had more appritation of the western way for doing things then when the army sent me to some god forsaken sh!t hole of a country. It is not until you have seen what happens when everything has gone wrong that you appritiate what has gone right.

Che, I see your point I just don't buy the slippery slope arguement. I especially don't see how enforcing the same immigration laws which have been on the books since the 1930's is some how a step towards national socialism.

Immagrants used to come to this country to be Americans...yes they held onto there old ways, but eventually intergrated themselves into this society...they became American! Many of the immagrants of today simply want the advantages of being in this country and really do not want to be American...infact a large number of them do not even like Americans. These people should be kept out and only those people that can contribute to our society and that want to be American should be left in. The quote "Give us your huddled masses" doesn't mean we have to take in every piece of "rift-raft" from other countries. On another note, a lot of these people cannot even speak english...and it really bugs me to see spanish next to english on food lables...and what the heck is this "press 1 if you speak spanish press 2 if you speak english"...this is America we are supposed to be speaking english. Many of these immagrants don't even try to speak english and that goes to show you just how much they really want to be American. Get rid of the garbage and law-breakers. This country is a melting pot not a septic system!!!!

Not all. The majority of Italians who came to the US just came here to make some money and then returned to Italy to buy a farm or start a business. The same is true of many Mexicans and South Asians today. Just because America is the land of opportunity doesnt mean you want to live here the rest of your life.

I haven't read all the replies yet, and I am so very thankful for all the moralizing, misguided though it is, but my real question was, does anyone have any advice?

My husband came here with a student visa. He went to school for awhile, but then he had financial troubles and he wasn't able to continue paying for school. That is when he became illegal. We would have applied for his green card earlier, but it is very expensive for a young married couple just starting out with a baby on the way.

And the particular reason that this is absurd is because he has been singled out because 1) he is a male, and 2) he's from Lebanon. I mean, with President Bush saying he wants to legalize Mexicans already living here, and with the fact that there are thousands of illegal aliens who aren't being targeted, this is completely unfair. If they were attempting to deport every illegal alien, that would be a little bit different.

As the spouse of a citizen, my husband has every right to become a permanent resident and then a citizen, btw. The inefficient and ludicrous INS taking so long to process applications is not our fault. If things were how they should be, he would already be a citizen. I'm a citizen of Lebanon, and I haven't even been there yet.

I'm sorry, but I feel that it is in many ways comparable. All this is is singling out members of a society because of gender and ethnicity.

If you can get ahold of him, there is a guy on this forum named Lancer who may be able to help you with this case. He married a foreign girl so he's been through the process of proving that they are married to the INS and all, he may be able to point you to some people that can help. You'll have to email him though as his private mailbox is full.

For everybody else,

As far as the issue is concerned, it's her damn HUSBAND of all people!!!

And about the illegals, I say legalize the agriculture and service immigrants as I guarantee it would be IMPOSSIBLE to fill their jobs with citizens. For skilled workers it's a whole other issue, though. This country was built on the backs of immigrants and although we need controls don't lump them all in the same boat. (No pun intended. )

No, it's singling out someone who's done something illegal.

And, as I posted before, those that were arrested after registering, and only had minor immigration violations, were released soon afterwards. So I would recommend him registering. but that's just my uninformed opinion. Oh, and as someone else suggested, speak to an immigration lawyer - they're far better knowledgable on this subject then any of us are.
