**** Gephardt doesn't stand a chance in h*ll. I'm from the 3rd district in Missouri, grew up there, live there now and I'll tell you he's not really that overwhelmingly popular here. I don't see how he thinks he'll win a national election. His best hope for the VP slot, but he's so bland, I don't think I could stand to watch that.
His other problem, besides his unbelievable white-breadedness and Opie Taylor looks, is that he's never faced a Republican in an election. Politics in his district is a Democrats only affair. The Democrat who wins the primary is pretty much the Congressman and the Republican is usually a young lawyer with ten grand to spend on flyers who needs something for his resume. He's pretty much kept it this way for 20 years with redistricting too.
While I will say he's an alright Congressman as far as that goes, he's never really stuck his neck out either.
He's good at raising money from unions though, and that's about his only strong point. I'm sure he's thinking that makes him look like a strong VP choice, as it will round out the money-raising ticket with any another candidate, none of whom can possibly be as strong in this area.

Given that Gephard couldn't even keep the leadership of the House Democrats, I can see no reason why the party would back him. He has been a weak leader, with little chance.
I like Kerry (you guys think Bush looks like anyting other than a baffled Chimp? go to Bushorchimp to see the startling similarities) but since he is from the Northeast and liberal, he would not have much of a chance. Lieberman, with his very centrist, hawkish, "pro-family" style might seem like a good candidate, but in the end, he would just look like Bush-lite, the Jewish version, and that doesn't win elections: plus he's looks are all wrong, as far as presidential goes.
Of course, if anything goes wrong in the next year (which is the most likely course of events) then men like Edwards may have a chance.
