I played 10 turns, but my log has just been 'destroyed' somewhere between my computer and Apolyton.
I write a new one soon.
Meanwhile, JRabbit can have fun looking at the save

Well, I bet SG(2) should be happy with my save

Because when I came to power in 740AD, I very much disliked what I discovered: a weak Republic, with a number of smaller and weaker cities, researching a military tech.
At second glance I noticed that Viking land was green and warm, compared with our barren tundra. I put on my helmet and told my people "go South, young men!".

760: Switch to Monarchy
780: La Fayette crowned by the archbishop of Woe...
Our mighty caravel sends a Viking caravel to the bottom offshore Lindholm. Our mighty crusader kills a Viking horseman wandering nearby.
860: FEODALISM discovered, Magnetism researched. Our ugly crusader kills attractive Viking legion.
880: Viking horseman kills our smiling diplomat. Our ugly crusader kills the horseman.
940: STWA completed in Was Zimbabwe. 2 harbours and a market place also completed. Crusaders under building almost anywhere.
King La Fayette disappears in the blizzard, bearing in the bottom of his heart the faint hope that SG(2) will be happy rolling over the Vikings.

Back to our current game. I have downloaded and managed to play the remainder of 940. Yes LF I agree - we go south, but on the way we will have a strong Republic to help our cause.

An interesting game full of contradictions! We have Mike's but are not using it effectively. We own the Lighthouse but are researching Magnetism. We possess Shake's but cannot exploit it properly unless in Republic. We have just built Sun Tzu's Academy which suggests a warlike Monarchy!

I agree with La Fayette that the warmer, greener Viking territory is a prize worth seizing. But it will take time to mount a killing attack. Sure - we can stuff a few boats with Crusaders and hope they get lucky, but this is more the tactic of piracy than considered and lethal strategy. With only a few turns in Republic we can transform our Empire.

940
Set Tax at 70% Gold 30% Lux. Sell Barracks at Mt 4 Special as we have Sun Tzu, and sell Library at Whale Woe. Swap Physics for The Wheel with Russians and also give them Republic to get an update of their maps. There are three Russian units on the Viking continent.

960
Ships are being rehomed at 2 Whales to be made happy by the Theatre. Hut - Nomad

980
Whale Woe builds Aqueduct. Hut Engineering

1000
Peace with the Vikings, give them Construction.

1020
Revolution to Republic Almost everywhere celebrating.

1040
Salt to Viborg 192g; The Russians are showing more interest in the Viking homeland. One of their caravels sighted heading west. To keep them friendly give them Feudalism and obtain new maps.
Population 1.67m

1060
Wool/Beads to Trondheim 336/150g Port Trondheim founded on rivered mountain. I've never placed a city on such fine defensive terrain This little town can act as a safe harbour for trading with the Viking capital and the bridgehead for its ultimate change in ownership.
Viking Canal founded When asked to withdraw their troops the Russians opt for war!
Population 2.29m

1080
Magnetism Farewell lovely Lighthouse Invention next;
Salt/Wool to Jorvik 80/80g
Population 2.98m

1100
Russians sink one of our Caravels, fortunately empty. The guilty ship is destroyed along with its cargo of three units. LittleTrondheim founded near two whales; Whale Woe size 12
Population 3.74m

1120
End celebrations, as most places would need substantial investments to gain further benefit. More caravans set sail.
Population 4.21m

1140
Start of turn...the Empire is stable with luxuries @ 30%, Tax @ 60% brings in over 200g less 24g for overheads, with a token 10% for science.

Bring on the Rodents

I would have preferred the seat of government at Cold Harbour, which is centrally placed, on our own continent. Now the cities are bigger it could be worth moving the capital, but at best it's only a marginal gain. If you're worried about corruption the obvious answer is become a Democracy

-Jrabbit

[1] was correct … the reference was aimed at the Conquistadors in our midst!

La Fayette

The day when a French General and a Scouse Admiral agree on everything we'll all be installing Civ 37! The more I have played this game the more I'm convinced that wars should be short, sharp and decisive! The rest of the time I wish to remain in the most advanced form of government available enjoying peace, planning either a landing on AC or the next campaign! War as a state of mind is a wasteful way to proceed. Rather than spending centuries chewing away at an enemy it's best to destroy them totally in a few turns.

Talking of strategy … why were we researching Magnetism? I did have hopes of SuperIronclads as efficient killing machines. Not much use against the Vikings as their cities are mainly inland, but very useful elsewhere…all the Russian cities are coastal.

I have played 10 turns in Rodentian Monarchy for comparison's sake:

It provides 3 wonders and 5 Viking cities (capital included); and we have 20+ crusaders available on the island in order to 'acquire' the remaining 4 Viking cities.
I would like to call that "decisive".

(have a look at my last turn in the 'Nothing Fancy' game to be convinced that I am not a stubborn Rodentian King all the time )

You know I am a great lover of ironclads, but the choice offered to me was between Magnetism and Chivalry.
With Sun Tzu, our Frigates (even without beaks or battering rams) will be very efficient against pre-Gunpowder units. All coastal Russian cities will be ours within a few turns if we will.

'lo [1],

Some of the terms used here are hard to grok. What is a lagomorgh? My college dictionary, circa, 1965, is no help. The closest is Lagos; but I doubt you are refering to the -Jman as a Nigerian.

And then there is rodent, presumedly rat??? What is the reference here?? Is it to a swarm of rats overwhelming everything in its path bringing the Black Death (courtesy of its accompaning fleas), befouling everything (its ubiquitous droppings), and generally, making themselves at home wherever they find themselves?? Bringing widespread, total devastation...scaring the sensitive into screaming witlessness....umm

If that is what one intends, does that make one a rat?? A RAR??

A wolfpack would accomplish that as well. I'd rather think of myself as a rabid aggressive wolf, RAW.

But who knows what may have happened during those long periods of silence and deep meditation in the monastery. It could have happened that I was bitten by a rat, a wererat, and that I unknowingly become a rat in my wolf frenzy. Could also explain how I came to be known as 'the Bloody' over the course of time. Yeah, that's the ticket, a rat bite induced frenzy.

One last thing...I really, really like cheese.

Monk (sometime rodent)

La Fayette ... your replay turns were a fine exhibition of Rodentian Monarchy !

When you took over the game at 740AD you rejected the idea of Republic. I have done some replaying from that point and I continued in Republic until I built SoL and went Fundy. (If you really want to be a rodent do it in style). Without Magnetism the fleet is starting to build many super ironclads.

I played until I took Trondheim in 1060AD.
