"The Core" sounds like the kind of movie where you're supposed to go, be entertained, drink soda and eat popcorn. Fine with me, because that's what I'll probably do.

Now, if I want to watch a *scientific* story in regards to the Earth's core, I shall scan THC, TLC, DISC and perhaps National Geographic on television for the occasional stories that they run in that vein. Either that or pick up an appropriate magazine/newspaper, or scan the Internet.

My point? "The Core" sounds like it aims to entertain, not enlighten. It seems to be working so far, albeit in a way its producers probably didn't expect.

This can't be dumber than XXX, the movie in which the bad guys release a solar-powered submarine to roam the world's seas...in land-locked Prague. The submarine, by the way, is unmanned and depends for the success of its terrorist mission on total stealth...but nevertheless has a built-in automatic voice mechanism that counts down the time to firing its missles, very loudly.

It can't be dumber than XXX. It just can't.

Planet of Apes is the dumbest (big) movie ever. It looks more like a PETA propaganda.

Independence Day doesn't rank far behind it. I was to the point of vomiting when they showed the scene where the heroes used a Mac OS to connect to the Alien terminal.

Starship Troopers were also terrible. One National Guardmen said that his company could wipe out all those "advanced" mobile infantry in the movie within 15 minutes. And the plot of Buenos Aires destroyed by an Asteroid sent by the Bugs is dumber than the Armageddon and the Core combined.

No way. Next thing you'll tell me is that Hollywood released a movie where an American submarine crew helped unlock the Enigma code. Now, THAT would be stupid!

Well, one of my friends said that the story looks dumb, but the special effects are what would drive the movie. I might see it for the special effects, but, yes, the storyline looks very lame.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Native Hollywood directors/screenwriters seems to be hot on special effects and braindead on stories.

But hopefully the success of LOTR and Harry Potter series will make some of them see the point.

Suffering from ads?

I have to say, although TTT was mostly good, it did have one or two odd points. I'm thinking specifically of the Helm's Deep part, where the orcs spend all their time trying to break down the main gate, while Aragorn and Gimli creep out of a side door.

I'm sure that bit wasn't in the book, but then again I did skim a few bits.

Actually, it was in the book, only it was Aragorn and Eomer and some others (including Gimli, I believe).

One thing my wife asked, and I'm still unable to answer:

Where did Gandalf's army come from?

One thing that I asked that my wife didn't know:

Why did Sauron run around like he was helpless when the trees started attacking? One would think that he'd cast Fireball+10 after Fireball+10, but noooooo.

Gandalf's army was those horsemen that Aragorn and co. met in the early part of the film, the guys who wiped out the orcs who had Merry and Pippin--led by Eomer, nephew to the King and Eowyn's sister. A little different from the book, but the spirit seems the same.

As for Saruman... it's just a movie, relax.

It was the Rohan army that Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas had encountered earlier (the one that slaughtered the orcs who had taken Merry and Pippin).

Sauron is The Eye over in Mordor. Saruman is Christopher Lee, who does pretty much nothing in the book as the Ents sack Isengard, bless their wooden hearts.

Sauron is the Lord of the Ring, the one the ring is trying to get back to. Saruman is his henchmen/lackey who was trying for a bit of his own glory... oopsie.

You know, that would've pissed me off had I read the books. A wizard who doesn't help his troops.

I was also thinking that when Gandalf showed up and his army attacked, that he was improperly positioned - anybody who has played CRPG's knows enough to put your big guys up front and your spellcasters in the back. Duh!

Well, to be fair, in both the book and movie there are very, very few troops (if any) left in Isengard when the Ents come to whoop a little deforesting-polluter ass. He probably realizes that it's hopeless.

Sauron is back in Morrrrrrdor!
Anyways, if you completely ignore the ridiculousness of "the earth's core has stopped spinning", this doesn't look like a terrible movie to me. The trailer was kind of exciting, and the acting that I saw wasn't too bad.
And why wouldn't aliens use macos in independence day??? You don't expect a measly os like windows could take them out, do you???

But if your spellcaster is essentially a 20th level demigod, it doesn't matter. Gandalf kicks ass in combat, too.
