	It's offical Hispanics and not Blacks are the largest minority group in the U.S. Tired of ads?

Faster increase The number of Hispanics rose 4.7% between 2000 and 2001 while the black population increased by just 2%. Asians are the next largest minority group after blacks and Hispanics, at about 12.1 million, or 4% of the population, while the native American population rose 1.5% to 4.3 million. Many Mexicans takes huge risks to enter the US Whites remained the largest single population group, numbering about 199.3 million in July 2001, nearly 70% of all US residents. The overall population rose 3.4% from 281.4 million in April 2000, according to the bureau. The estimates are the Census Bureau's first statistics on race and ethnicity since the results from the 2000 census were released. Leaving Mexico Some two-thirds of the Hispanic community is of Mexican origin and correspondents say they take extraordinary risks in order to enter the US. The latest fatality figures for illegal migrants show that since last October, more than 20 have died trying to get across the border. The BBC's David Willis in Los Angeles says that many of those who do make it end up doing manual or menial tasks in order to earn a living. Every day throughout Los Angeles, he says, hundreds are to be found outside home improvement stores offering their services in return for the minimum hourly wage. Many parts of the city have become heavily reliant on their labour.

Also includes those from Latin America who would probably be considered black by the average American (due to skin colour) but who considers themself hispanic, if rather dark (Brazil and Cuba are two major sources of this...)

Hah. 2001 census data for Canada was just released yesterday.

Shows ethnic Chinese largest visible minority (at 3.5%) followed by South Asian (3%), Black (2.2%) and Filipino (1%)

Not really. Hispanics still vote Democrat more than they vote Republican. And the change isn't brought about by the fact that the black population is decreasing relative to total population, but rather that hispanics are increasing in population much faster.

Plenty of immigrants. Just that we don't have a large native black population historically (slave industry was present but not as important) and no native hispanic population (from conquering California and Texas). Our immigration rate is actually extremely high. Right now 18% of Canadians were born outside Canada...

the population of the US is now 284.4 million. the hispanic population grew 4.7% in 1 year, the black 2%, while the overall population only grew 3.4%. major minorities already make up 25% os our pop, and if all populations continue to grow at this rate, in 61 years, they'll make up 33%, and on 103 years, they'll make up more than 50%.

well, at least i won't be alive to see it, hopefully.

That's about the same as the U.S.. I remember reading that currently 1 in 5 people in the U.S. was born some where else. That's the highest rate since the 1880's.

About the political implications of this: While Hispanics do tend to vote Democratic for the most part, but that is for the most part due to Hispanics being poor. Non-ethnic factors on deciding who to vote for tend to have a great deal more impact on Hispanics then Blacks. While Blacks show little difference in their voting patterns between rich and poor blacks(they tend to vote overhelmingly democratic), there is a significant difference between how rich Hispanics and poor Hispanics voted, Rich Hispanics do tend to favor the Republicans in strong numbers. Also interesting is that the longer a Hispanic has been in this country the greater the chance they will convert to Evangelical Protestantism, and of course Evangelical Protestans tend to favor the GOP moreso then Catholics.

Even though Hispanics tend to be poor, they almost vote dem vs rep on a 1-1 basis. The only exception may be California in which the Republicans thouroughly pissed off all immigrants a fews years ago.

Even in California there has been a strong turn towards the right by Hispanics who were born in the U.S.. Of course Hispanics born in the U.S. tend to have educations and incomes closer to the national average then immigraints so that might explain why they followed the country to the right.

Rich blacks vote republican as well: its a matter of class, not race.

The only Hispanic group that votes consistently republican is the Cubans (they happen to be the most affluent hispanic group). All others, when they vote, vote Democrat since they are usually poor immigrants, and those concerns overrule cultural concerns, same as with Blacks: after all, blacks are very relegious yet they don't flock to the evengelical right either.

No, more minorities, as long as they remain poor, is a boon to democrats. The dems. problem is the relatively low turnout by the poor. If dems. were able to make black and hispanic turnout equal to that of whites, they would win most elections in the large states handily.

No, actually they don't. 90% of blacks vote Democrat, that includes rich and poor. The rich might vote MORE for Republicans, but it doesn't mean they vote Republican over Democrat as a group.

In plenty of elections, black turnout as a percentage is greater than white turnout as a percentage.
