Settling Location Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Well - since Wise Ass does not seem to be around currently and IW as delegate is not doing it I'm taking the liberty to kick of the discussion.

If you look at the map, I'd say there are two spots for the next two cities. The first one just south of the potato, the second one north of the coal.

Furthermore I think we can risk moving the settler along without protection. There were no barbs around when Dave passed through and really - i'd just risk it, because it's most important not to delay settling.

So - city 2 south of the potato on the river - any thoughts?

I think Dave should explore the terrain near the grape while we build an extra Warrior. Though far away, that looks like it might be an excellent city location as well.

I agree, on the river below the spud, that allows for 2 border bumps for each city without overlap.

I can't imagine a spot that would be so good that it allow for waisting quite a number of turns of moving the settler. It's a must that we build our second city ASAP.

My vote is for the potato site.

We need to ICS a bit... with a little garrisoning thrown in.

In this case, closer is better... we can worry about spreading out when we've got a foothold in the world.

Potato site looks the best. We can get there in a couple of turns and the river allows for quick troop movements between the cities etc.

Any reasons for the west? If you look at this screen shot http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...304#post1668304 the best place in the west would be south-west - though the Austrians are close nearby. Maybe we should settle there to fend their expansion off. But then, it'll take us at least 4 turns to get to a equivalant site to the south-of-potato-spot, which can be reached in 2 turns.

I think Dave should explore the map around him and especially to the west where there should be a very valuable site to settle.

I also think we should move the settler unprotected to the east where Dave will explore the map, do we really have the time to wait 4 more turns?

Bob should go East and help Dave exploring the area as I think we will be forced to extend our empire in the East/South-east part of the map.

Don’t know if it’s just me, but doesn’t the phrase "Bob invades Vienna" sound suspiciously like something from Monty Python.

Who’s next? Buddy? Jim-boy?

Dave should continue his quest to go where no man has gone before (preferably to the west). I think Bob should go have a look at what’s on the other side of our capital. We may need to expand that way.

Send the settler to the potato. That way we can create our greatest invention ever... chips!

Does anyone have great objections to the river tile just south of the potato? Because if - we need a poll, otherwise Wise Ass or IW for that matter should just order it next chat.

The tile North of Dave seems better as the grasslands would give a better growth rate, this is why I think Dave should explore the land around him and check if there is not another german city too close from this tile.

I fear the land around the river tile will not allow the city to grow quickly enough.

I think, the potato makes up for the swamp because it gives a good food bonus - plus to get the settler to Dave we waist too many turns - the third or fourth city, yes.

And it's also easier to defend two cities that are close together!

mapfi thinks, and I agree with him, we could perhaps avoid to vote on this matter if we could reach a consensus (tell me if I am wrong mapfi ).

I am rather concerned by the fact the quorum has not been reached in several thread and this could slow down the game.

hm, seems i missed quite a bit in the last week.

i would prefer the spot north of the coal on the river, it will grow badly, but have enormous production, even more if we once later begin adding mines to the mountains, so it can be used for building wonders and to quickgrow reinforcements to be sent quickly north on the river. and it will perfectly fit in with our established borders.

the potato area should be explored by dave moving west further and then maybe somewhere around the potato city #3 could be placed.

but since i seem to be the only one thinking this way a poll might be obsolete

We need a poll to decide upon.

Even if no-one objects, we still need a poll, otherwise whoever doesn't like the 'decision' could go to court and make a call against it.

I think that as we may be in conflict soon(for the future survival of our small nation), then closer is better. It will be easier to defend our cities.
Just south of the spud looks fine, then our next one near the coal and near the grape later would be good.
What more could our people need - Chips and wine and a roaring coal fire

Got spare money?

No Gilg, settling is not something that must be polled (unlike war e.g.) - but I'd prefer a vote too.

As for the coal site - it's a good one as well but growing will be slow there. I think we should use the growth of a city by the potato to build another settler and then settle there.
