Finnish RIAA says "You will PAY!!" to pre-school children Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Finnish day nurseries to pay royalties for nursery rhymes?

It seems that Finnish equivalents of American RIAA, Teosto, which represents songwriters and publishers, and Gramex, which represents music producers and artists, want to force Finnish day nurseries to pay royalties every time nursery staff sings along with kids.

Currently most of the Finnish cities have an existing deal with Gramex to use pre-recorded music in government-owned day nurseries. But now it seems that also Teosto wants to have its slice. According to Teosto's rep, every "musical performance" that uses copyrighted songs -- including sing-along by staff with the kids -- should be liable of paying royalties to Teosto. Also Gramex wants to force the private (those not owned by government) day nurseries to pay for the records they use in nurseries.

In last year both organizations demanded Finnish government to abolish the system that allows churches to use religious hymns without royalties, even if the songs would normally require royalties to be paid (the copyrights cease 70 years after the original composer's death).

Now all we need is the US RIAA to follow suit, forcing anyone buying it's records to pay additional fees everytime they play a song IN THE PRIVACY OF THEIR OWN HOME and the world will finally be rid of the corporate evil that is the Music Industry.

Seriously, it is astounding how assinine these guys are. If the record has been paid for LET IT GO! They have no business forcing people to pay twice for a product unless they really are trying to commit commercial suicide.

Horrible, isn't it. What's more surprising is that even this hasn't made the politicians slow down Teosto.

Teosto takes away a charge for every bought CD-R too. And to my knowledge the tax is much higher then anywhere else. And if they already repair the costs by this charge, then why the heck is piracy illegal? It's not piracy, since everyone pays Teosto for it!

I wonder what would happen if book publishers formed their own organisation and started taxing books with similar fervour...

Oh, and if you order chargeless CD-Rs from abroad, and the customs happen to notice them (i.e., they were ordered from a non-EU country ), you have to pay up.

Of course, you can apply to get CDs free of charge, but you have to be an organisation or a company, and the paperwork is horrendous.

FYI, I pay 10.90 e for ten 700 MB CD-Rs.

Did I mention that a tax on hard drives was in the works a while ago too? Don't know of the current situation, but I think it was scrapped. I hope.

What's happening with the hard discs? There was some talk a while ago there should be an extra fee on those too, since you can store illegal copies of songs and films on them...

Lol! So people living multi-storey buildings, row houses or near lakes would have to pay an extra tax on a pollutant pays -principle!
Yes, Teosto is even more effective than the Mafia. Teosto can make people pay three times for the same album. First a radiostation buys it from a shop and pays a tax for it, then the radiostation pays a tax again for playing the disc and broadcasting it on air and finally a customer pays extra for hearing the broadcasted music in a taxi!

WHY is none of our precious 'politicians' even wondering what Teosto is doing? NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT! This is a clear message to the mob that Teosto is.. and it's 'go ahead, rob everyone, we don't care'. Time to really think about what should be done with these criminals. We, the people must stand up to these disgusting corporate people now. Taxis are WAY too expensive even now.. I took a cab, 7 kilometer ride (about 4 miles?), cost me 15 euros! I'm telling you if we don't stop this communist thing happening here, we're all going to be sorry some day. Personally, I'm moving out of here, but when the revolution starts, PM me and I'll pick up arms too .
