What to Research Next? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Mapmaking -- trade maps, make ships, build Great Lighthouse. Beat GoW, Legoland, GS.

Literature -- build libraries, build Great Library

Polytheism -- on the path to Monarchy. Beat Lux.

Knowing that we would have the exclusivity of Literature for a while has made me change my mind about researching Polytheism. It looks like we won't have competition for the Great Library for a while, and it is a nice shoot to try. We would get the Great Library plus all the other techs the other civs would research for us!

It needs to made clear that we only suspect we will have Literature to ourselves. Once we trade Writing and it gets around, each of the others will re-assess their technology directions, having more options at that point.

Also, if we do get the Great Library, there are downsides as well. We won't really be "pulling our weight" in the tech trading (formal tech alliance or not) and that will make us an object of scorn and jealousy. It could also make us a military target due to it's worth.

All that said, I am in favour of pursuing Literature and the Great Library.

Someone please remind me, does the Great Library include techs from nations we have no contact with or only with the civs that we currently know?

Also, has anyone given any thought to how the GL will affect other nations attitudes or ever paranoia towards us?

[edit]: It has proven thusfar that a lack of trading techs is counter-productive to a team's success and possibly moreso a disadvantage. Every team seems to have grasped the need to not be perceived as closed-off or exclusive. We also have none of the disadvantage we would have in relation to the higher-level AI that would make the GL truly advantageous to staying competitive.

Agreed. If we get the library we must invest in a great army to protect us from all that jelous people. But we are suposed to get enough money to do that. Aren't we?

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

It only includes nations that we have contact with, and yes, it will annoy our neighbors, as their 3-way tech triangle will serve to gift us with a number of undeserved techs.

Got spare money?

I think Mapmaking would be better as then we might find Legoland. I think it is unwise to seem too standoffish, which having the Great Library would make us be.

And as for money, we can set our research to almost 0 and increase our funds.

Personally, I'm more for the Poly-Monarch route, as that will both boost our REX & reduce our corruption. In working on the spreadsheet for Dejon, I have found that his city will have 41% corruption/waste while not connected to the trade network & 35% when it is. With Monarchy, this will be reduced to 29% while it's not connected (it should be by that time) and 26% when it is. The only other thing that will help reduce these figures is the building of a courthouse (which will require Code of Laws).

As for a GW, I say that the Hanging Gardens would be the best to support our growth.

I knew it would be high, but I wasn't prepared for that!

For some that are just joining this discussion, the discussion actually started in the Wise Men thread, with this post. A few posts down from there is my argument against Map Making. Also, having the Great Library doesn't mean we have to become isolationist - we can trade our "free" techs to others to reduce jealousy. It seems we will soon have contact with 5 out of the other 6 civs, so if 1 completes and tech and trades it to someone else - we will get it and then be able to trade it to the other 3.

The Distance Factor is what's the biggest contributor to that figure. It will be reduced by 1/3 with Monarchy.

This will also have an effect with all of the other cities that are planned. Being on a Standard map, only gives a slight bonus to the commercial civs.

It doesn't really matter, in my opinion... we'll probably trade for whatever we don't have.

Poly then Lit. My decision, anyway.

(We'll probably end up trading for the 3 we don't research anyways )
