Are we allowed to know which nation our team mates are playing? What sort of communications are allowed? I take it tech exchanges are out?

You cant communicate about the game until you've met. So no strategy or tech planning etc. Once you have contact in the game you're completely free free to work together but no trading techs to other civs (teams).

You can trade/give techs to your team member but not to the other four players.
