EVERYTHING I have ever read of his has had an Anti-American perspective. Plus, I have never read anything of his that says anything postive about America.

Maybe you have read more of his stuff than I have... but, I've read a lot of his writings.

I do believe that the situation in Afghanistan could be turned around but it requires a 5 to 10 year commitment that seems to be being lost in the rush to Iraq.

What is the basis for your "seems"? We are to keep ~9,000 troops in Afghanistan indefinitely, the same amount as we've ever had on the ground. In each of '03 and '04 we are spending $625 million in assistance, just as we said we would.

I am a cynic. I agree that the troops and money will be in Afghanistan for the next 12 to 18 months. After that Afghanistan won't be news, there will be other countries/situations needing aid and there may be a new US president with other priorities.

Time will tell.

I've read enough Fisk to know that he's rabidly anti-American (The Guardian, for instance, just loves him). Like Ming says, that doesn't make him wrong, it just means he has an agenda to push, and you should know that when reading his work.

He's also, as Ming says, very pro-Palestinian (The Lebanon Star carries articles by him all the time. Every single one of them is anti-US/anti-Israel). Again, that doesn't make him wrong, just biased.

Know your source, Horse. If one of the US uberpatriots showed up and posted a bunch of stuff from say... the Washington Times (known right-wing nutjobs), you would react with a strong dose of skepticism. Same as I do with Fisk. If you've read one of his articles... you've read them all.

Imran:

The WSJ is conservative, is it not?
It often has a pompous, preachy style, has it not?

the "no mention of America's support for Israel and its occupation of Palestinian land" was a jibe that should have fitted in another place, ok.

But he's just spicing up his writing style a bit. Does that really come across as anti-american or biased, compared to the the excessively boring style of US media?

Taking the place can be done, holding it cannot. Afghanistan has the potential for being another Vietnam, if we don't have the sense to leave. That said, we can always take the place again, and by so doing keep the terrorists off balance and away from our skyscrapers. Rebuilding the place is like rebuilding South Central LA. Just fuel for the next fire...

The difference between Vietnam/Afghanistan and Iraq, AH, is one you know I'm sure...

"WE WOULD RATHER DO BUSINESS WITH 1000 AL QUAEDA TERRORISTS THAN WITH A SINGLE AMERICAN"

This sign was prominently displayed in the window of a business in Philadelphia.
You are probably outraged at the thought of such an inflammatory statement.
One would think that anti-hate groups from all
across the country would be marching on this business... And that the National Guard might have to be called to keep the angry crowds back.
But, perhaps in these stressful times one might be tempted to let the proprietors simply make their statement . . . We are a society who holds Freedom of
Speech as perhaps our greatest liberty . . . And after all, it is just a sign.
You may ask what kind of business would dare post such a sign?

I support afghans growing poppies for drugs.

But the country is a wasteland, they may as well have a national resource to get back on their feet. They can't do it without drugs.

Regarding renewed poppy production in Afghanistan, it's *not* because America and her allies aren't trying to stop it.

Indeed, the U.S. Agriculture Department (hmm ... I think that's the fed bureaucracy involved with this) has been trying to get Afghan farmers to grow crops, instead of poppies. To this end, there's been expertise offered and millions upon millions of dollars appropriated to "tempt" the Afghan farmers to grow something else (i.e. we're paying them *not* to grow poppies). Unfortunately, an on-going drought and good prices for poppies are twin barriers to progress on this issue. That, I believe, is why poppy production has gone up since the fall of the Taliban.

That, plus the fact that farmers likely won't be killed or maimed now if caught growing poppies. After all, the Taliban are pretty much out of power.

The Pakis have never been able to control their territory and probably never will be able to control it. That's why Pakistan is such a haven for terrorists and militants because areas like the north west are effectively controlled by anyone with a gun.

Being a critic of aspects of US foreign policy does not make you anti-American. You label someone like that and all you are saying is you aren't prepared to listen to alternative points of view.

I thought he was saying that the situation in Afghanistn is falling into depressingly familiar patterns. Is it anti-American to say this?
