BFM, good idea... I'll suggest it. |
hi ,
nope no kidding , ....
the later you have a golden age the better , .... even in MP (!) , .....
there are situations where you cant prevent the trigger of a GA , but in those cases you should make the best of it , .....
several excellent players in MP make others trigger the a GA , in the mid term and long term this is good for people who can hold out on the GA of themselfs , ....
carthage gets the UU with bronze , .... trigger it then and build next to nothing , .... it seems attractive at first but it is not , .....
have a nice day

Panag,
1. Most games are clearly decided (or sometimes end) before the modern age arrives.
2. IMHO, this whole "the later you have your golden age, the better" approach is inherently wrong. What matters s not how big is the push that the GA gives you (meaning how many extra shields and commerce you earn), but how much ahead that push puts you relative to the other civs. It's all about relativity, really.
I find that the best time to get your GA is during the early Medieval Age. Those bonuses really help you build your libraries and marketplaces, and they're also very useful if you're contesting for the Sistine Chapel, Sun Tzu's Art of War or Leonardo's Workshop, for instance (which many argue are some of the best wonders in the game). |
hi ,
Shiber , the later you have the GA the better , meaning later then the first 25 techs at least , ... you yourself like it later , ......
every player like something else , you like early medieval age , some like it right away , etc , .....
a good builder - planner does not need a GA for a wonder , ...
have a nice day

a) when you are out of Despotism (obviously)
b) at the start of your first major war (GA triggered with first attack)
This is far easier for some Civs than others, of course, because of the timing of their UU - in the majority of games the first major war will come with either Swordsmen or Knights.
If you haven't already won the game by the Modern Age then you've done something wrong - if you had used your GA a thousand years earlier you might have won already.
The major disadvantage we face here as Carthage is that we have a priomarily defensive UU. Another team could easily blow our GA during despotism with a cheap suicide attack if we're not careful. Sure, that'd be a risky strategy, but we shouldn't rule out that possibility. |
hi ,
good point , a GA should be at least with republic or democrazy , .....
as stated before we could face someone who wants to provoke a GA with us as early as possible , we should try to prevent this , ..... we could simply not build the UU , ....

The thing I'd like to prevent is having our GA with only 4-5 cities up and running. The game is about power relative to the power of the other civs(not the silly score reported in game). Sometimes an early GA will help you leap frog into the lead(in terms of power). But with a limited number of cities you can only 'jump' so far.
Side Note:
The score that is displayed in MP games is almost practically useless; it ONLY considers the number of citizens (with a bonus for happy ones), and the number of tiles under your contol. This is what the score represents, for the most part. It does NOT represent Tech or Units. WE should pay no particular attention to the score other than to indentify which civ has a larger territory.
Back OnTopic:
If an early GA can help us completely conquer another civ that is our direct neighbor (this is important), then I'm all for it. We can assimilate all of his cities and land and improvements and not worry to much about losing the edge in growth and development. Playing as Carthage we should offer a false peace (because the game allows it, not because it is ethical) to the civ we attack in exchange for tech and/or gold, and then back-stab them for the rest of their cities. This is an early grab for Carthage, we cannot count on being a scientific powerhouse. WE need to rip Techs from other civs cold heartedly. Of course our Reputation will take a hit, but who are we going to trust anyways?!
If we have an early GA we need to take advantage of it quickly by striking hard and fast and by betraying peace treaties in order to gain Tech and land.

Somewhat insolent of you to tell me what I think, especially when I said the opposite, don't you think?

That's what this argument is for. Since we are going to play together, we have to decide who's preferred GA timing is best for this kind of game.
You should not take disagreement as criticism and personal attack.

Perhaps, but we have to assume that the members of the other teams are good players too, no? In that case, a GA would certainly help if we're in a race to complete the Sistine Chapel or Sun Tzu's Art of War, for instance (IMHO two of the most sought-after wonders in most games).

hi ,
let us be clear on one thing , ......"You should not take disagreement as criticism and personal attack" , you have to start to think more positive about others , ..... because they dont even come close to that in terms of thinking , ..........but if you will to go on and continue to say that that is what others thinking you creat problems , .......
just relax and think something positive ones in a while about others , ....
GA ; well carthage seems to do good with republic , it really gives a push , ...... maybe we should try to race for that first , .....
now all we need is a good map and good city places and we are skyrocketing , ......
have a nice day

If war is unavoidable, the Carthaginian GA is good for (duh) pumping out many Mercs., which basically ensures continued survival. Ideally we have around 7 cities in this scenario, anything under is definitely a waste. This is a fine use of a GA, but not the best.
Since the Merc. is essentially a sweet Pikemen, a Medieval era, GA-assisted war is quite nice. By this time, most main cities have all relevant tile improvements and we're out of Despotism. This reduces the time to completion of Knights significantly, on the order of 3-4 turns (that's a lot). Mercs. would be produce in about 2 turns. This scenario is basically using all of Carthage's trades together to create the most efficient war-time economy that I can think of.
Or, if we stay out of wars entirely, a GA can be used to build up Aqueducts, Marketplaces and Libraries (and, why not, a Wonder). We would trigger our GA by asking an ally to lose a Warrior to one of our Mercs., with a small compensation.

This may be true, but the Great Wall is still not worth it. Remember, we're not using the AU mod, where Walls come free with the GW...we'd have to build them manually. Plus, a fluid defense is better than a static one (Mercs behind Walls), since the attackers can seriously hurt us by pillaging instead of conquering.
