	Secure Apolyton ISDG Chatroom Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

To get rid of duplicate chatrooms (ApolytonISDG & ISDG), passwords, and to increase the security of our chatroom, I have asked Shiber to set up a well secured chatroom that will supercede the two ones used until now. Shiber, thanks for setting it so quickly up!

The new chatroom, using the name of ApolytonISDG is using an access list to prevent unauthorized personell from entering. To gain access into it, you need to register you nickname first, activate your registration, and ask to be added to the access list.

Here is a quick guide for those who are not familiar with the IRC stuff:

Registering your nick

• join the Apolyton IRC chat under your desired nickname (try sticking to your regular Poly nick, please)
  
  
• type /msg  NickServ  REGISTER  password  your_email
  
  Note:choose a strong, difficult to guess password (like 8t7ewy$ ) and do remember it well! Keep in mind that case matters: FIDO, Fido, and fido are three different passwords!
  
  
• you shall then receive an authorization code from the Apolyton IRC server to your email account (specified in the REGISTER command) in no time - just check your email account without actually leaving the chat.
  
  
• look into the authorization email, you will find the following line there: /msg  NickServ  AUTH  nine_digit_code  - type it in the chat window
  
  
• you should get a confirmation that your nickname has been successfully registered to you; next time you join the chat under your registered nickname, you will need to specify your password using the following command: /msg  NickServ  IDENTIFY  password
  
  
• strengthen you security setting by using /msg  NickServ  set secure ON and /msg  NickServ  set kill  ON
  
  Note: for more information about NickServ, type /msg NickServ help. It would be fine to type /msg NickServ help commands in order to familiarize yourself with some of the commands, in case you'll ever need to use them.

Please DO NOT attempt to join the channel before you have been added to the access list, or you will be auto-banned, and you will have to wait for an authorized user to unban you.

Once everyone registers and is added to the access list, things should go on smoothly.

Vlad, you forgot to set the kill protection option on. Not that it matters, since any user that takes your nickname will not be allowed into the channel anyway until he registers (so it won't really matter if the kill protection would kill his connection after a minute of using the nick without identifying or not), but I recommend that you turn it on anyhow.
Type '/msg nickserv set kill on' if you want to turn it on.

Anyone with official status (consuls, ministers, special advisors, official food tasters and so on), please let Vondrack or myself know so that we can give you elevated access. It comes with channel operator status and the ability to kick and/or ban other users, should you need to, plus the ability to change the channel mode to moderated, thus momentarily shutting up everyone else who is not a channel operator or a voiced user.

Since it may be useful to more than one person here, I'll post how to do so here.

To un-register your nickname, type in this (with NICKPASS being the password you used to register with):

/msg nickserv drop NICKPASS

You'll then be able to register a new nickname.

I do have this to say, this is taking things just a little too far, as far as I'm conserned. What is wrong with a password protected room that we have been using? There is being security conscience and then there is being Paranoid and I feel that we are very close to the edge of paranoia.
